That's how it works. You only need to believe that you can wield the Light in order to do it.

Plus, while he never bothered with the Light in the past (partly due to the NE had little to do with the Light and partly due to Fel being the more destructive power so far), Illidan was shown a vision by Xe'ra. In that vision, he was wielding the Light wrecking havocs to demons and evil of the Voids, that his followers / fellow soldiers looked at him in awe and wonder, and he looked "calm, strong and at peace". Seeing how much Illidan want power and to become something grander than his brother, I wouldn't be surprised if he is very willingly to hug and kiss the Light now (although he was still a bit skeptical about it in the book).

That is in (far) future after he became a champion of Light. The point is that he was shown a vision, in which he - wielding the Light - was all grand and powerful. That's all he ever wanted - both power and being grander than Malfurion. Being selfish and powermonger, that vision seemed like a really good bait to hook him into the Light path so you can't say that it's OOC for him to be interested in using the Light now even when he wasn't for the last 10,000+ years. He was still a bit skeptical since that wasn't like any path he ever walked on, but you can't deny that the interests are there.

Also... dragons came out of Elementals, and dragons have genders, so i see no reason why elemental would not have genders, they may not have sex though

Am I the only one who thinks "the chosen one" is a weak plot device, and that a hero's success or failure is far more interesting if it is driven by choice instead of the concept of "destiny"?

If you can't come up with a good reason for why and how a character will save the world/universe, you play the "destiny" joker. Just a cheap plot tool.
