Yeah and this is why when you call yourself an independent and not a republican we think you are full of crap. The courting of the southern racists by the republican party via the southern strategy and their switch over is a well know facet of history.

Ever heard of southern democrats? I bet none of them are racist. You think I am full of crap because you don't care about truth, you care about sides and when I post something you don't agree with you label me because you rather remain blind.

No I am asking you to support your claim of "Democrat party is full of segregationists and racist". If you want to acknowledge that that claim is bullshit and now change it to something else feel free. But till you do I expect you will support your claim.

No, but even as the article you linked suggests, people can vote based solely on their economic positions.

To be sure, Shafer says, many whites in the South aggressively opposed liberal Democrats on race issues. “But when folks went to the polling booths,” he says, “they didn’t shoot off their own toes. They voted by their economic preferences, not racial preferences.”
Some racists might vote for democrats, because they're experiencing economic hardships or don't believe in trickle down economics, but that's not the norm.

I don't know a single person down here who is opposed to mixed marriages, or was calling Obama the "Anti-Christ" when he was running for his first term because he was "black and from Kenya" and proudly declares themselves a democrat. That just isn't going to happen. Those same people here love the idea of the wall, limiting immigration and kicking out 11 million illegals. Many of them don't care for Hispanics and get angry when they hear them speaking Spanish.

I'm sure there's bound to be some very confused racists in the Democratic party, just as there's bound to be a few oddball philanthropists in the republican party. Simply voting in one election doesn't particularly do well in identifying which economic and social principles you espouse from which party.

Lol yeah whatever. You can keep trying the revisionist history thing as much as you like. No-one with an ounce of sense will believe it. There is a reason Reagan gave his states rights speech at the county fair near where a bunch of civil rights workers were murdered a decade earlier, and which was known for providing space to segregationist politicians to give racist diatribes. It wasn't because he wanted to try out the fair ground rides (those dang federals ending our discriminatory race based laws!).

The irony of the civil rights bill is if jfk wasn't assassinated it would have been harder if not impossible to pass it under the republicans. When JFK was assassinated Johnson (a southern democrat) used his death as political capital bringing it to republicans saying you should pass it to honor JFK legacy. for those who resisted he used the infamous "Johnson treatment" and made comments like "if you stand in my way (from passing this bill) I will run you over".

After this bill the republican/southern democrat base revolted . Those republicans in the south/midwest who voted for that basically became party outsider, got voted out, or changed their stance on it later. Some of those republicans eventually became Democrats. Many democrats from the south immediately changed to republican. What many did was similar to what democrats in the modern day did when voting for Iraq or patriot act and say later they were duped to pacify their base.

Yet Nixon and other republican strategist noted this divide and quickly came in to scoop up those democrats who hated this bill and used their hatred to develop the southern strategy. For example Goldwater was the first republican to win Arizona for a presidential election. Yet trying to deny that the "southern strategy" wasn't a thing is being dishonest or just trying to twist what actually happened.

Even in your Wikipedia article it even points out the political rammifications of those who voted for the bill. Like Johnson was right by voting for that bill "we lost the south for a generation".

If you want to look at the real story you should see what state those representatives came from and how they voted before shouting republican good democrat bad. The politics of the 1960s were completely different than the politics of today.

Because as we all know the two sides swapped positions. That was precisely the point of the southern strategy. The pro-civil rights republicans who were a minority of southerners were sacrificed by the republican party to draw in the larger racist majority who at that time were democrats.

No-one is denying that pre-southern strategy the democrats had a lock on the racist voters with racist candidates and that the republicans had a lock on the racial equality voters. It was the employment of the southern strategy that occurred AFTER the civil rights act was written into law that provided the impetus for the political switch.

So continue your right-wing reality denial all you want. In point of fact keep it up because the more you do the more your political party will die the slow death it deserves.

Yeah on average parties change about every 40-50 years so we are probably overdue to a realignment which we are starting to see. When the party formed republicans were pro Union which meant pro industry, later republicans Became the trust busters party in the 20, then in the 70-80s became Wall streets best friend and now as we head into the 2020 they are fading back into a more small business/libertarian from an economic point of view.

    Fast forward to 2013:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/26/us...ling.html?_r=0

SCOTUS rules the voting rights act of 1965 to be unconstitutional. 5-4, right down party line... Do you see the deference between 1965 and 2013?

When you look at the gong show which was the GOP nomination, you can surely appreciate Obama. Then you settle down with the fact that Trump is the final person and you realize that Obama is leagues above what the GOP shat out as their nomination. Then you look at Hillary, she is just unliked by so many yet she has a ton of experience. The GOP have been trying to nail her for years but has shown nothing in return. Hillary is meh but she isnt the devil like Trump.

It is so funny, Trump is a big fuck you from the GOP voters and they do not give a rat's ass that they are voting for their own worst enemy, not the brightest bunch that is for sure.

Regardless of all that, Obama has class, he is wicked smart, he is articulate, he has no skeletons in the closet and he is funny. He was the President that was needed at the time he was elected, he started the process to get the US out of the huge mess it was in. He was effective and steady and if it wasnt for the GOP deliberately not working with him, his record would even be better and the help the general public needs form their government in tough times would have been even greater.

You should really read source you posted more carefully. If you look northern Democrats overwhelming voted for C.R.A. In fact if you look at percentages. The Dems were higher than the Republicans.

Anyways. Everyone here gives credence to southern Democrats, as basically be racist or segregationist. Now all those southern states vote Republican.

See... I read the content provided by your source and find that according to the source that you linked that more Democrats voted for the civil rights act than Republicans. Per your link 199 democrats voted for the final version (153 Congressmen & 46 Senators) while only 163 Republicans did the same (136 Congressmen & 27 Senators.)

Now if you want to amend your statement to say that a greater percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for it then fine, but it's also worth noting that most of the Democrats that voted against it were from the deep south states, which all changed their party allegiance to the Republicans not long after the Civil Rights Act.
