Question Has anyone ever seen so much Marketing for a game?

I was driving into my no-name dinky shopping mall in the middle of nowhere, and next to the toll gate theres a Poster for OverWatch. Like I'm used to seeing AAA game posters on Bus-stops, Trains, Buses, Billboards etc.... but literally it's everywhere. Websites, forum banners, those little stand ups in near the middle of kiosks in the mall...

And then there's the second thing. The amount of porn production and the popularity of it, makes me think Blizzard must have a marketing department devoted to making OverWatch porn. Because I've never seen a game have this much porn of its characters so quickly, and so readily available.

Or am I just being paranoid?

MOD EDIT: We're not going to discuss porn here, it's on the forbidden topics list.

Well, the porn thing, that's a society thing, the times we live now. That's the "pornografication" of communication the age of digital era has brought.

But as far as marketing goes, man, I guess you weren't around when things like Super Mario World or Ocarina Of Time were released. The amount of advertizing, on TV alone, non-stop ... the merchandise, the food industry products, the posters, the banners, cardboard stand-ups. It was wild.

I feel that it was even more massive than today, because the communication channels were more unified. Everyone watched TV, everyone read the same magazines, everyone was "on" to what everyone else was doing. It was a much less fragmented and disjointed world than today, so in a way it was easier for a company that could afford a potent marketing campaign to create that massive buzz.

I seriously hope you aren't stupid enough to think Blizzard has anything to do with that. People extracted the character models from the beta with programs like Ninja Ripper and edited them.

Overwatch has bus stop advertisements in Australia, which is very unusual for a game. And on the sides of buses, but that's relatively more common.

If you think Blizzard is behind the porn industry then yeah, more than just paranoid. Everything that is successful ends up with a porn parady, even Screwing Private Ryan. If you think Tom Hanks is secretly penning deals for that porn to be made then there is definately a screw loose.

As far as marketing goes, does it hurt you at all that people market things? More likely that it helps you as the more people you have to play with the more fun the game will be. If nobody hears about the game you have a tiny pool of people to play with and thats not fun.

This isn't even really thread worthy.

I wonder if this guy thinks that all the gay Edward/Jacob fan-fiction was also marketing for Twilight?

I'm pretty sure games such as The Elder Scrolls, GTA or Call of Duty and others are even worse when it comes to marketing

I'm currently seeing more advertisement for Doom than for Overwatch.

I haven't seen much marketing, at least not here in sweden and still I see a lot of swedish players on EU servers :P
I think I have seen previous wow expansions getting more marketing than Overwatch.

Destiny is the biggest I've seen.

I've seen very little for OW besides a very short tv advert.

People at my work have never heard of it.

edit: For the porn crap, the game has technically been out for a very long time already.

Doesnt have to be successful. Remember, that crappy Mario movie had a porn made for it. "If it exists. There's porn of it".
