And more often than not, if I'm with 5 defense/offense heroes, it ends up being a shitty game for me even if we win because they all invariably have the lone wolf "I'll totally carry our team" mentality, and they never do.
This. Generally my mentality is that I'll take a number of matches as support without issue, but then I expect to be able to take a number of runs as something else. A tit for tat mentality, yeah?

Way too often I see people hooking onto one or two Bastions, sprinkled with sinpers and (if I'm lucky) a tank.

Healing's fun, but to me it's not fun enough to be the only thing I do in the game. I want variation, and the CoD mentality (the teamless lone wolf) is too prevalent.

I should start making some friends, I guess :P

My experience is that about 50% of the playerbase will instalock a Genji, Hanzo, Widowmaker or Tracer. The other 25% will contemplate and then lock in either one of those 4 or bastion/junkrat/mccree and then they will all spam "We need a healer!"

Luckily, I enjoy playing support. I main Zeny and Symmetra with the occasional Winston.

I feel like I usually play Lucio or Reinhart and after 3-4 games and no one else wants to do either role I say fuck it pick dps and we get stomped and I close the game.
    Hi Sephurik

Been playing lucio alot i like support but the other ones are to passive for my support taste. Ive started playing mei now and really focusing on blocking slowing enemy sniper or support.

I do change if I notice we are lacking in a key area. I like Symmetra but am not good with her yet. Ill probably be focusing on her and Widowmaker next to get good at. I find Mercy boring and as a result do poorly with her, but can play her if I must. I just prefer Lucio.

Yeah same. I always pick and wait to see what everyone else picked. My go to is S76, but if we are lacking in a key role after everyone else picked Ill change it. Though On defense I usually go with Torb before S76.

I've honestly been finding it's better to master a couple of characters than to constantly swap. Otherwise you end up mediocre at all of them. That's why it's important to get a team of people who can all play around each other in my opinion. This game has a much higher skill cap than say, HotS, and as a result "flex" players likely won't be as prominent as time goes on.

Right now my big three are McCree, Roadhog, and Symmetra. Trust me, I've seen a rank 4 Symmetra cause unholy hell for my team and she was OFFENSE. Practically carried them. Hate to say it but you don't get that good by constantly swapping to whatever heroes or flavor your team needs at the time of.
Thats why you pick 1 of each role to get good with first.

My favourite character turned out to be Symmetra, sucks you can't play her on Offense or Capture Point though.

I'll play support or tank as long as I'm not told too. However the moment someone says go this or that, I do the opposite.

Symmetra is SO much better to have on a team if you also have a Mercy or Lucio with her. I appreciate how many people will also choose a Mercy/Lucio when I lock into Symmetra, considering she's basically just a damage dealer with a bit of utility.

Same. Every time I get a defense map I lock into her as fast as I can so someone else doesn't grab her first. And I groan when it's an attack map.

She's so active . Lots of people play Reinhardt at the moment to for Offense so it feels good to just spam energy blobs into his slow face.

That's why I think Symmetra is misclassified. She's a defense hero, not a support.

They probably flipped a coin on it.

If they're serious about the competitive aspect of Overwatch the supports probably require the most serious balancing pass. Mercy/Lucio clearly outperform Zenyatta and Symmetra in the support role, Symmetra because she doesn't support for shit, Zen because he dies literally at the drop of a hat.

Actually Lucio isn't that noob friendly when it comes to really support.

Sure you can skate arround, shooting people, bumping people and call it a day. But Lucio is actually the only "healer" in the game that has a cooldown on his heal (the passive healing aura being really low). You need to really think about your placement when you really want to support with him.

Mercy and to a lesser extent Zenyatta are IMO easier support to play. But Zenyatta having a really low healthpool, people who pick a support to "fill the spot" usually don't like him.

I just started playing Mercy today and I feel I was pretty decent with her. So now I have at least 1 hero in each role I can play somewhat competently.

Roadhog, Reinhardt, Junkrat, Soldier:76, Torbjorn, Mei and Pharah are the ones I am fairly good one. But I am working on Winston, Mercy, Hanzo and Genji just so I can be as helpful as I can in the right situation.

I am one of those players that like to play every role, but when you DEMAND I pick XXX role when you have locked in the opposite I will ignore it.

Same thing happens in League of Legends, someone picks and locks in a squishy ass champion then tells the rest of the team 'we need a tank', these people piss me off.

Zenyatta absolutely is not an easier support to play. Motherfuckers won't stay in line of sight and he has no way of getting them back into los, and if you try to do so, you're probably going to die.

It's a shooter, people want to shoot things.
    How is this surprising?

I've rarely seen a round where tanks and supports weren't used unless it's a goofy 'all mcCree' match or something. Healers and tanks tend to get all the votes at the end as well.

Symmetra has a lot utility with shields and teleporter and stops flanking pretty hard.

Zen is more offensive and has utility with his tank melting orb, it increases damage by 50% that is an incredible amount. He does a lot of auto attack damage as well.

Symm and Zen are just different types of support.
