    1.5k budget for vive

so my budget goal is 1.5k, willing to go a little over if need to but wont spend more than 2k

i also plan on getting a vive within the next couple months. but thats not counted in the budget.

i already have windows, a monitor and mouse/keyboard.

i dont give a fuck about what the case looks like, or glowy shit or any of that fancy rich people bullshit, planning on putting a piece of plastic on my head so i just want the most power for my money with the least amount of vanity possible.

I'd probably do something like this + the best performing AMD card that you can get. (Or a placeholder until Vega).

If you don't like the Xeon idea, then:

    Something like this.

Or you can go X99 with a 5820K or 6800K, or wait for Zen. Too many possibilities.

Wouldn't it be better to wait for the 1070/1080 that are coming out in June?

Their VR capabilities far outdo the 980's

I see two problems with what you posted @Immitis.

The first is that I'd rather have a good air-cooler instead of the AIO at my computer. But that's personal preference.
Reason is that with air you have less things to go wrong.

The second thing is the 980. Not only it isn't worth it because of the 1070, but Nvidia is also bad at VR due to frame variance. It might pull you the frames you want, but you'll be feeling a headache after using it for some time.

If you want to go with Nvidia then buy 1070/80. If you can buy something else then the best option is to get a placeholder until Vega.

The 1080 is on sale right now, but it's basically out of stock everywhere.

The 1070 releases on the 10th.

Will more than likely be out of stock also.

I lied Newegg still has some.

100~$ more than MSRP though, so your call.

Newegg still has the Gigabyte version in stock.

I can't comment on the quality of the OEM though, I've really only ever bought EVGA.

For a 5820k? If you'e going to OC and I assume that you will then a beQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 or a Cryrig R1 Ultimate. A Noctua NH-D15 would also do the job.

    - - - Updated - - -

You can read a Broadwell-E review here and decide for yourself if a 6800K is worth it for you instead of a 5820K.

If you don't plan on overclocking then X99 CPUs aren't really the best options. I'd just buy an i5 6500 or a Xeon E3.

We don't know enough about how VR games will be to be able to recommend something for sure.

If you want to future-proof yourself then HT (Hyper-threading, the main difference other than caches between an i5 and an i7) might be good, for current games it doesn't really make any difference and an i5 is more than fine for gaming.

tbh i mostly plan on using my vive as a giant screen/movie watcher with desktop vr. so im not super worried about the games themselves running super duper bestest.

from what ive read just quickly googling the xeon seems to do a lil bit better than the i5 and its not a huge difference in price.

Being very honest, I wouldn't buy a 1080 seeing how bad it is at DX12 and likely at VR. You could go with a 1070 that has a more reasonable price if you really want to go with Nvidia, the 1070 is still around Titan X performance which is really good.

so. i ended up just going with my original build except with the nocturna cooler instead of the water cooler.

building my first pc was.. stressfull. especially since i started building it before realizing i had all the parts but the cooler. i wanted to pull my hair out and was worried i was gonna break something. when i got done building it the thing wouldnt turn on so i went to bed. woke up in the morning looked at it again and i had just put the power led cables into the wrong prongy majigger. as stressful as it was, theres a weird sense of pride and accomplishment having something i built with my own hands.

i feel like this computer is more than just a computer. its something i made and i care more about it than i would if it were just something i took out a box and plugged in

going from 5 fps on the lowest settings in wow to 200+ fps on ultra is pretty life changing. its like i can see into the future i have so many fps's, everything is so beautiful, and shiny, and smooth.

now im gonna go test some of the 400+ steam games that have been sitting collecting dust in my library because i couldnt even run them on my old pc (it was from 2003.)

    pc gaming master race confirmed.

i really hope you go with the 1070 or 1080 when you can get your hands on one. beating a titan for $400 is just ridiculous.
