The two possible solutions I gave are ones that work within the confines of current laws. They have problems sure and will not instantly solve everything but neither will as you phrased it "total and unconditional gun control". That in itself has huge, gaping issues.
For one like you mentioned, America has a huge gun industry. One that is large enough that getting rid of it would have economic ramifications. Secondly, Americans have a love for guns in the culture, many people shoot for recreation. Thirdly, Americans place a lot of value on liberty.
And the biggest issue of all, you cannot seriously expect to enforce a gun ban with hundreds of millions of guns already owned legally in the country with an uncounted for amount of illegal ones which would increase into a huge, fully fledged black market in the wake of a ban. It would be the second rise of organized crime in America.
Look at the failures of the war on drugs or prohibition if you seriously expect a nationwide firearms ban to work.
