    Assault Weapons are not real

really getting tired of hearing informed idiots shouting to ban assault weapons. Or assault style weapons. Assault Weapon is neither a class nor a type of gun. Assault Rifle is an automatic Rifle used by militarys and has been banned in the US since the early 80s, and has not been used in any of the recent mass shootings. Media and politicians throwing "Assault" Or "Military style" in front of rifle or weapon for shock value is beyond retarded and anyone who knows even an ounce of anything about guns just rolls their eyes when they hear politicians exclaim they want to ban the sale of Assault weapons.

So can we please for fucks sake stop describing guns as Assault Weapons, or "Military Style AR15". Everytime i hear someone on the news say those they lose all credibility with me.

So you would be fine if they say semi-automatic weapons? Doesn't make a difference though as the AR-15 is just the civilian form of the M-16.
You can't fix stupid. But damn it you can troll it!

if people say it long enough it will become a real word. that's how language works.

or, easier, if a new law defines them as such, it also becomes a real thing real fast.

Semi automatic rifles are a real thing. Assault weapons are not.

Turns out it is a legal definition under the DOJ. So it actually exists as a legal term and 7 states use the term in laws.

Blame the government, since the label assault weapon/military style weapon is coined by the government and exists since the.... tadaaa.... Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act became effective in 1994. The bill is ever since known the Federal Assault Weapon Ban (AWB).
So, wakey wakey.. good morning for being late to the party, but the term is factually established since at least 22 years.

And btw.. the Military doesn't use Assault weapons either.. Since you're so hung up on labels.
They using Military Grade weapons, like the MG 16, which happens to be the "big brother" of the AR 15.

The definition varies among regulating jurisdictions
And its different in tons of places. So it has no real meaning, means this here and that there and different things here and there. And its still a shock word used by politicians to label guns they dont like. there is no definitive definition of what and Assault weapon is. Or what a military style rifle is.

A law defining something is actually the meaning. Also the DOJ defines an assault weapon as a semi-automatic weapon.

    exactly..
There's one confusion that is mentioned wrongly, but one can say it's only semantics.

An assault rifle would be a full automatic rifle. And people commonly use the term also for semi auto rifles.
The average person stumbles over the assault weapon vs assault rifle.
Yet like I said, it's arguing semantics, since everyone and their grandmother know what's meant.

Everyone knows what you mean when you say assault weapon. We use a lot of technically inaccurate terms every day. For example a lot of people here properly have "4g" on their mobile, despite 4g not being deployed in any country yet according to the technical definition of 4g.

Verizon Wireless, in the US labels it's wireless network 4G LTE. Gotta give em credit for that.

But most don't. And it is weird to even have the 4G there to begin with. Just kinda started happening to advertise that it was better than 3G.

    been thru this before

Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 defined certain firearms as assault weapons based on the features they possessed. This included semi-automatic rifles with a detachable magazine and at least two of these features: a pistol grip, a folding or telescoping stock, a flash suppressor or threaded barrel, a bayonet mount, or a muzzle-mounted grenade launcher. It included semi-automatic pistols with a detachable magazine and at least two of these features: a magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip, a threaded barrel, a barrel shroud, or an unloaded weight of 50 ounces or more. Additionally defined as assault weapons were semi-automatic shotguns with a rotating cylinder, or with at least two of these features: a pistol grip, a folding or telescoping stock, a detachable magazine, or a fixed magazine that can hold more than five rounds.

so basically its one too many mods on a gun and bam assault weapon.

So, 49 people get killed, what you take away from it is that they can't get the terms right?
I am pretty sure people are shocked enough already with 49 people dead.

What makes it an assault weapon? It has to have that "shoulder thing that goes up."

You mean except for the fact that an M-16 was a light machine gun and the AR-15 isn't? Pretty big difference there.

Nobody actually knows what an "assault weapon" is. It was a term coined by the media and anti-gun activists.

It has a real meaning in certain jurisdictions. You just admitted that yourself. Please, do keep digging that hole!

And the fact that the word is used in the regulation of firearms? Nice try though!

Nobody knows what it means because the definition shifts to whichever weapon they want to ban at any given time.

Activists came up with the term. Nobody knows what differentiates an "assault weapon" from any other kind of firearm.

Semantics are no fun for anyone.

Stop arguing over semantics, and the choice of words.

A rifle that is not single action, single shot, and not designed for game hunting, and is instead a semi-automatic, which can be easily modified to be full auto, is an assault rifle. Period.

There is only 1 single use for these type weapons, and that is to kill people as quickly and efficiently as possible.

And yes, they are assault rifles.
