Dell UltraSharp U3415W and Video Card Question

I'm looking at the Dell UltraSharp U3415W. It says it has a maximum resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels. My video card is MSI GeForce GTX 760 OC Twin Frozr IV 1085/1150MHZ 2GB GDDR5 2x DVI HDMI DP PCI-E 3.0. The maximum resolution on the card is 2560 x 1600.

So, the maximum resolution on the monitor that I will get is 2560 x 1600 because of the video card right? Is it still worth having that monitor? I suppose I can upgrade the video card in the coming months, but not guaranteed.

Not sure why you think that's the max resolution for the video card. The limitation generally is on the output port (DVI, display port, HDMI - all may have various restrictions or limitations) not the graphics card and those are generally well beyond the 3440x1440.

Mind you while it's not as demanding as 4k, it is still significantly more demanding than 2560x1440 and this is only a mid level card.

So you will need to turn down settings or accept lower frame rates.

Not all games support a 21:9 aspect ratio though.

It's possible that is the reason you are seeing that as the max resolution, most of those can be hacked to get it to use the true resolution though.

Resolution per se is not the problem. The max resolution on your card is probably the one for VGA / DVI output. With resolutions higher than that you need to use the Display Port (which on your card probably is version 1.2, and supports up to 4k 60fps). HDMI is not enough, because on the higher resolutions you would only be able to get 30fps.

The main problem with your video card would be performance. I have a 2560x1440 monitor and a GTX 770, and on newer titles i have to turn down settings to high (or even lower) to get 40+ fps.
On older titles you should be ok.
Why do something simple, when there is a complicated way?

Interesting stuff. Right now I run two 24" Asus monitors and play WoW/Overwatch on high settings without a problem. If I have to lower the settings a little, that would not bother me. I do plan on trying Battlefield 1 when it drops.

For WoW / Overwatch you might not have too many performance issues. But expect BF1 to run terribly with that higher resolution.

To run BF1 I would just need to upgrade to a better video card right?

Most likely. Depends on your current CPU, but chances are, that even with an older i5 (e.g. 2500k) the video card will be the main bottleneck.

People are running 1080s with the 2500k and 3750k and so far no issues not even on Witcher 3.

Main issue is always the GPU if you're looking at ultra wide 3440x1440 and 4k
