Talking about feminism becomes dull at best after awhile, although you seem to have endless energy for the topic.

Views regarding Emma Sulkowicz are dependent on whether or not one thinks that she was actually raped. Clearly NOW believes that she was raped and was being brave by taking about her rape and demonstrating its effect on her via her performance art piece.

If you think that she made the whole thing up then of course you would think the award is ludicrous.


My opinion on the topic, not that it matters much, is that evidence either way is extremely vague. People are sexually assaulted in interpersonal relationships all of the time. Clearly she had feelings for the man, as evidenced in the texts that she sent him; her having feelings could mean that she was raped and she did not openly discuss it with him, or at least not via an electronic means. It could also mean that she is slightly crazy-pants and made the whole thing up.

Overall I still think that it is fully possible that something questionable happened, much of life tends to exist in a grey area and that is simply the state of things.

I think ultimately though it cheapens the concept of rape. The reason our culture goes into violent "Lynch the rapists!" mode is because we consider rape to be on par with murder, and indeed usually people put Rapists right next to Murderers in terms of crimes.

Whatever did or did not happen to Emma Sulkowicz it wasn't the thing that can stir up a lynch mob. But they, they being N.O.W want all sorts of trivial things to be treated with the same revulsion, but in all honesty what will happen is the word rape will no longer carry the meaning it once had. Maybe Emma had sex she later regretted, we all at some point in our life, but saying they were raped cheapens the word.

Well, on one hand, all rape is traumatizing in some way or another. That is, unless you have absolutely no knowledge or memory of it. On the other hand, I agree with you; there are far worse rape cases on a regular basis that do not garner nearly as much media attention. Horrific acts about infants and 87-year-old grandmothers being raped to death...it does a disservice to those survivors, to have so little media attention given to what has happened to them while we talk about the same 1-2 cases ad nauseum. Apparently what the media cares about are college girls getting raped lately...

*If* Emma Sulkowicz's account is accurate (that he kept having sex with her after she said no) then that in and of itself would meet legal definitions of rape, however.

This organization is a big deal and helps pave the way for feminists agendas and ideals. They legitimized a girl who cried rape, and made a porn about it.
