i have heard that before, havent seen much evidence to support it. still an interesting possibility. another theory is that its because in japanese culture interaction between children of opposite sexes is frowned upon, except between relatives, so some never really develop skills at interacting with the opposite gender.
before people almost exclusively had arranged marriages so it wasnt as big of an issue. now they are less common (although my cousin had one not too long ago).
