In unrelated news, watching the 2011 Hunter x Hunter (on episode 38). A friend of mine really liked it and I try to give things a shot when he recommends them, even knowing I'm walking into a shounen series. Been a while since I watched one of these, and I'd forgotten how ridiculously easy it was to marathon. It's like eating potato chips: once you start munching it's easy to always have one more.
Thus far I'll say it's likable, understanding that expectations can't be too high for this type of series. Gon is a decent shounen protagonist. He reminds me a lot of Dragon Ball's Goku, which I think is overall a lot easier to take than the more common angst-filled type that's always whining about having to get stronger. His companions are mostly okay, although I find Leorio insufferable. Mito (his aunt) is cute.
On the flip side, Hisoka is exceptional as a rival/antagonist. They did a solid job on his creepiness. His link between physical violence and sexual excitement ("schwing") is something that is actually documented for real people, which makes him both eerie and plausible. He's my favorite part of this series.
The few fights I've seen thus far have been quite reasonable. They aren't excessive in length nor are they reduced to simply powering up. Hisoka's fight with the doppleganger opponent was my favorite thus far. I appreciated that Hisoka wasn't invincible, but that he knew how to abuse appearance and psychology to maximize his impact.
