IF you subscribe to the Keynesian school of economics, as most leftists do, you would understand that for the theory to work, debt has to be paid down during times of boom.

Sure you can spend to stimulate growth, but the second part of the theory is ignored.


So with that being said, and since the biggest argument I hear about economics on mmoc is how debt is just a number and doesn't matter, why bother collecting taxes at all?

Errr what no it doesn't. Government debts are hardly ever paid down, and attempting to do so simply forces up debt loads in other parts of the economy with potentially ruinous consequences. Debts are almost always taken care of by economic growth. For example here is an image showing gov deficits and surpluses post WWII.

If I had any confidence the money would be going to train in-demand skills like STEM degrees and trade skills, I might be open to the idea depending on the cost vs. return. I don't have confidence in that however. More than likely it will just be a bunch of losers delaying adulthood to get degrees in lesbian poetry..........studies.

Hillary may want to tack on major debt absolution for those WITH college debt to really secure her the youth vote, this has a lot of great stuff. The Democrats may yet save their skins with the youth vote, but they will have to essentially make debt forgiveness and changing college tuition rates a top priority.
