Olympics: every Russian athlete banned except for whistleblower and a long jumper

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has rejected every Russian athlete except Darya Klishina and Yuliya Stepanova from participating in international competitions.

Alexandra Brilliantova, head of the legal department at the Russian Olympic Committee, said Ms Klishina, the Russian long jumper, who trains outside Russia, had been cleared to compete as a "neutral" athlete at the Rio Olympics.

Earlier in the year, Yuliya Stepanova, an 800m runner has also been accepted by IAAF, but still awaits IOC approval and an ethics committee before her place is confirmed.

But none of the country’s 136 other athletes that applied for “exceptional eligibility” were accepted, following the Russian athletics federation’s ban from international competition.
The whistleblower, Stepanova, was called "Judas" by Putin.

Is that one of your fake Putin quotes again?

Innocent n guilty are banned alike, but she isn't? Sounds like she was bribed. Also what if this was done to all countries? You got some that cheat, ban everyone whether they have taken substances or not. Then nobody will participate at the olympics. This reeks very political hit move against Russia for singling them out, everyone knows roids is rampant all over the world. Especially in the US, *cough* *cough* Armstrong..

I didn't want this Olympics anyways, enjoy your Zika virus n pretend now that competition is steroid-free.

Shouldn't this thread be in the Sports page?

    Again?

Also, what are you talking about? The Putin reference is explicitly in the Guardian article ...

MLB allegedly has lots of roids - but they don't compete in Olympics.
Lance Armstrong was caught by the United States Anti-Doping Agency; that's how doping agencies are supposed to work.

Well, if they cheat, they get banned. If everyone cheats, everyone gets banned. Even Russians need to learn to play by the rules like everyone else.

Everyone "cheats". It's Olympic sport, roids are necessary not only to improving performance, but also to improve recovery. Olympics w/o drugs would become quite pathetic show. IMHO, no one would be able to beat current records, so they'd need to purge few decades of WR and OR to make it possible to set "new" records.

What Russia needs to do is to step up their steroid game, both cycling and PCT are needed to be improved. Better specialists/doctors are needed to be hired.

Need to be like China and "lose" birth certificates and make up new ones so that their olde.... I mean, young athletes can compete!

Honestly, I wish they would just drop all pretense of drug testing for the Olympics for once, because you just know that none of athletes would be able to control themselves from abusing PEDs to a farcical extent. And just one glance at all the roided out freaks competing will turn off the vast majority of viewers from watching Olympic sports forever.

That's a bit difficult to do, Russians dun have as much control over media as Chinese do.

Better doctors and drug usage are a better way to fix this issue. At this point it's also a required change

Oh, I just meant they need to learn to be better cheaters.

After winning 7 tour de france titles? That´s how doping agencies are supposed to work?

Lance Uniballer Wonderboy was only "caught" after several years and "winning" 7 Tours de France. Many in the watchdog agencies were at some fault as well. It's still a mess and with ongoing lawsuits up the wazoo.

Maybe, but Russia got caught. And it's not like the athletes are doing it of their own accord, the doping is state-sponsored.

Sports in general would be much more fun to watch if doping was legal. Watching some hulk throw a javelin a few kilometers or a bike rider going 400 km/h. Much more interesting.
