Why is someone "sellingout" such a bad thing?

I hear that combination of words a lot on the internet, it discribes bands, brands, streamers, game devs etc But why is such a bad thing?

I hear people bitch and moan all the time about how say for instance swifty selling out to razor or notch selling out minecraft. Is it not a life goal to get money? I hear bands get acosted for selling out to big record lables saying "its not about the music anymore man" but to me it was never about the music in the first place thats why they charge you for going to see them singing. Even that hippy Kirt Cobain was not above charging you to hear him sing and he supposedly shot himself for his music going "mainstream".

Bact to streamers for example swifty may go on cam with razor shit all over him but he don't force you to buy a Naga everytime his stream goes on.

There are two ways of looking at this, at the very least.

The first is a concern that commercialisation results in a reduction in quality, as people become more focused on what produces the greatest profit rather than what has the most depth, artistic value, etc.

The second is a function of elitism. In a society of mass media and mass consumption, accusing people of prostitution by making their work accessible to the general public outside a group of people with 'select tastes' is one of the few remaining ways to mark yourself as socially distinct and above everyone else.

There is often an implication that people are doing things for the benefit of their sponsors, as opposed to doing it for themselves or their fans.

I have no idea who Swifty or Notch are, so it may not be true of them. There is also the product placement which is often crass.

Just to keep saying the same thing over and over, selling out is often followed by a perceived reduction in quality.

I don't blame anyone for selling out. Usually selling out turns their work to shit but I still don't blame them. When a musician or any other kind of artist sells out, usually their best work is behind them anyways.

When you create a image as you begin your career in entertainment, people stay because they like who you are as a personality. They know what to expect out of you and will keep coming back. When you "sellout" you might have just changed a key factor of what people perceived you as. This throws people of and you appear less genuine. Many fans actually believe they relate to entertainment figures and selling out or doing other activities that the audience isn't used to will cause them to distance themselves.

If the art/content or whatever suffers because of money, then it's selling out. If it's the same or improves then it's usually just people jealous.

In case of streamers it assumes them becoming dishonest as far as paid stuff is concerned - and not all of them disclose what exactly was paid or not...
Game devs - means undermining initial vision (and possibly existing community) in pursuit of profits. Betrayal, basically.

And no, "getting lots of money" is not a goal for everyone. Even "getting enough money to continue doing same thing" is not always necessary (some have buffers to go through with their vision even if it flops commercially).

I don't see good fealing and fan prases keeping food in the fridge or the heat on so why is it greedy and shallow?

There is the concern that what you are watching is just an infomercial, other than unemployed fat people nobody really wants to sit through an advert pretending it is not one.

Usually, because people who watch streamers are often teenagers who don't understand the stress you can put on your life by doing nothing but streaming games for little to no profit for hours. Many people don't understand that streaming/youtube videos are barely profitable and these people are putting out entertainment in exchange for almost nothing in return.

That being said, certain events have left people jaded and weary. There are many streamers/online entertainers who will try their hardest to make it seem as if sponsored content is not sponsored and this is not only duplicitous but also just downright wrong, and arguably sometimes even illegal. There's been a ton of controversy about this subject and people haven't exactly been warmed to the idea of sponsored content because of others who have engaged in shady activity. I would say that in your case, Swifty has earned his poor reputation because he changed almost completely as an entertainer once he became sponsored vs when he considered it a passionate hobby.

That being said, it makes me unbelievably mad when a streamer/entertainer online publishes a sponsored video or streams a sponsored game and their fans just abandon, destroy or on youtube downvote their videos to oblivion. It's disgusting to me that such a huge portion of the online community can't fathom the concept of people having to actually sacrifice a large portion of their day to make videos like this.

Probably people who don't have an income themselves, so they hate someone who tries to make their hobby profitable.

Acording to people yes it does
I find it hypocritical that these same people also pirate movies/games /music as well. Have a coke can in your move "selling out to big corp" is decride from movie critics.

Selling out implies that you do not keep back enough to keep production going and that you give everything away for less than it is worth just to get rid of it.

Does anyone (streamers i mean) look directly at the cam and shout "drink pepsi ride the wave" or do they just have a coke can just sat there? and they drink from it because unless he/she is saying marketing slogans at you i don't think it counts.

If I got offered a lot of money for doing something I already kinda halfway like doing I would sellout in a heartbeat.

Not yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's a thing in the future.
