Army didn't lost. If it was full Turkish army (e.g. all force commanders and Chief Staff), the coup would be successful. This is an attempt (or a staged one) by low-ranking officers.

Not really convinced it was staged. Don't think Erdogan would have asked for asylum, but instead flew straight back to Turkey, or better yet, the staged coup would have happened with Erdogan still in Turkey.

Seems foolish not to take advantage of the image of him being staunchly in his little castle (or maybe even in the streets), if it was staged.

One could easily get the false impression that there is no reason why germany would refuse asylum but actually there are reasons. Also it would be a bad move for erdogan himself to seek asylum in germany. If a coupist turkish government want him evicted, they will surely come up with some crime they want to charge him with. And I am pretty sure germany would comply with the inquiry.
