GOP Platform Proposes To Get Rid Of National Parks And National Forests

    http://thinkprogress.org/climate/201...ational-parks/

The Republican platform committee met this week to draft the document that defines the party’s official principles and policies. Along with provisions on pornography and LGBT “conversion therapy” is an amendment calling for the indiscriminate and immediate disposal of national public lands.

The inclusion of this provision in the Republican Party’s platform reflects the growing influence of and ideological alliance between several anti-park members of the GOP and anti-government extremists, led by Cliven Bundy, who dispute the federal government’s authority over national public lands.
Another in a series of... interesting moves by Republicans.

All hail the dollar, the One True God of fiscal conservatives everywhere. Amen, I say to you, care not for your fellow man, nor the beauty of the world you live on, so long as either stands between you and another 300,000 yearly bonus. Ask not what your country can do for you, but how you can stripmine your country for another campaign donation.
Be seeing you guys on Bloodsail Buccaneers NA!

Just to be clear, their proposal is to turn them into state parks.

I think it's a bad idea, but I also think the headline framing is deliberately misleading.

    What a terrible idea. https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/news/15023.htm

National Parks and Forests can return up to 10x on investments. As a citizen of the United States, and an avid proponent of outdoorsmanship, I take great pride in the incredible variety of natural venues on offer in this country. Getting rid of them would be a horrific waste of some of the precious little wild places left here, and a terrible business decision.

You just said exactly what the headline says. There would be no more National Parks or National Forests, as well as no more federal protections for those lands. They would be free to be sold or developed on a whim.

"That's a very broad brush to basically say we're going to turn over all federal lands to states; some states don't have the resources to handle it," said West Virginia state Senator and committee delegate Vic Sprouse
Sounds like many of the other.... interesting plans Republicans have shit out in recent history. Not very well thought-out beyond what it will buy them personally.

I can't find a source for this that isn't think progress and I don't trust them.

You're right - my interpretation of "transfer to state ownership" was "turn federal parks into state parks". A state would presumably be able to do as they liked.

Are National Parks really that big of a slice of our budget? I mean, it's $200 million here, or roughly a dollar per taxpayer. The federal budget is about $3.5 trillion. NPS is about 0.006%. That's like a monster hitting my Prot War tank for twenty-five damage. If that's the hit that kills me, my problem was dropping to twenty-five hit points from other parts of the raid. I mean, SNAP/foodstamp fraud alone, at a historic low by the way, is more than the NPS budget. You'd think the GOP would be more upset about that than...trees.

Don't worry guys...it will never happen. They will can't get anything to pass that would destroy our National Forest and Parks....think it's against the rules....and we love our nature. These people all live in cities right? Don't know what it's like to go out in the woods and just wander and look and get away from it all? Won't happen, period.

I lived in PA for a while, second most forested state behind Alaska. Absolutely beautiful but I can see why Republicans would want to flush that all down the drain so that they can line their pockets, that has been their standard operating procedure for a while now.

Whatever, this is already the dumbest republican platform they've had in decades. Not really much left to be shocked by. This is the consequence of letting your party get commandeered by the Tea Party and the fundamentalists.

Sorry, but they are not turning them into state parks. They are looking to sell for private ownership and exploitation.

Congress should reconsider whether parts of the federal government's enormous landholdings and control of water in the West could be better used for ranching, mining or forestry through private ownership.

Timber is a renewable natural resource, which provides jobs to thousands of Americans. All efforts should be made to make federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service available for harvesting. The enduring truth is that people best protect what they own.
So the Think Progress headline was actually accurate.

If the GOP gets their way, we aren't going to be too many decades away from looking like China...

The current Republican platform seems more malicious than idiotic.

I guess history will be the judge.

It was, at one point. Those days seem to be long gone now.
