Samsung 850 EVO is a benchmark. If you can afford it there is no reason to go cheaper.

Can pick an EVO up for £39 (used)... assuming its worth it then. Why's it so much better?

Samsung is the leader on that market for a long time already. Their stuff is fast, reliable and relatively cheap. Make sure you dont get 840 EVO, getting 750 EVO is fine.

Might I ask why not the 840 EVO?

I've been a running a 1TB one in my laptop basically since they were released, and I just moved it into my new desktop.

Sat at about 12TB written. Should I be worried?

You shouldnt, it's a good SSD but will never sell for 39 EUR, it's likely some kind of scam.

    I don't think they're referring to an 840 EVO 1TB for £39. Probably a 250gb.

I'm a bit confused too. You said not to get an 840 EVO.. but didn't say why.

850 evo isnt the budget pick. You can find 480 gig ssd's for under 100 bucks regularly, cheapest ive seen was an adata for 89 bucks a few months ago. Id stay away from anything called silicon power tho.

I think it's because the 840 had some firmware issues which would cause slowdowns of the SSD, pretty sure it has been fixed a long time ago.
