The train is a "Regionalbahn" which is the smallest train the german railway operates. It is basically two or three wagons connected to one or two rail cars. It serves villages as small as 500 inhabitants. It is totally unfeasible to get security at every of those stations.

People are not checked on trainstations, you could kill everybody inside a train with no problem if you have firearms in there as there is nowhere to run, so luckily this guy only had a axe or it would be a bloodbath.

I think the real problem here is that people are allowed to walk around in public with an axe. It's only common sense that people should have to get a license to carry around an axe, and that it should be concealed such that if someone pulls it out we know it's for no good.

actually, that's how it is . Well, at least if you want to use a train and so on since that isn't a public space anymore.
