Why are Demon Hunters a Hero class?

The idea of a hero class is nothing more than a higher level character in a unique starting zone/story.

With the level boosts, one of which is even free, I just don't get why this class wasn't made like a monk and started from 1. Especially considering how this class is going to be extremely popular, starting at a higher level is even more of a draw factor. Really am seriously worried about the over flooding of this class + melee in Legion.

just like WOTLK it will be over saturated for a few months but then things will start balancing out again.

Hero class = class inspired directly by a great name of warcraft. That's the definition they gave back in WOLK

    death knight = Arthas/Lich king
    demon hunter = Illidan

And as said. Their won't be any real flood. Just like WOLK, everyone was crazy about "OMG there will be Arthases everywhere". Didn't happen.

Even on beta, environement were you could see even more DH than live (as their is no real cost for temporary rerolling). You'll see plenty of class played.
Another thing : stop worying about what others ae doing. Just focus on your own experience and how you enjoy the game.

Ealyssa is right on the money with the official explanation, but another common trait to the hero classes is that it's also implied that a DK or DH was already a veteran fighter before ever donning the mantle of his/her hero class. They start at levels 55 and 98 because there is no such thing as a level-1 DK or DH in lore. The lich king didn't convert a lowly peasant to become one of the officers in his army. That peasant is now a shambling zombie. Illidan didn't stand around in Dolanaar recruiting level-1 warriors and rogues to join his elite forces. Not worth his time.

Ask yourself this, OP. How much sense in the context of Warcraft lore would it make for there to be level-1 Demon Hunters autoattacking boars outside of Dolanaar?

You can see a novice Mage/Warrior/Hunter/etc... running through Elwynn Forest as he starts out on his adventure. A Demon Hunter and Death Knight? Not so much.

They will be EVERYWHERE, and since it's elf only, get used to pointy ears and annoying voices too. I don't really care about removing useless skills, but I do care about every player out there I meet is the same race and class, that's the real pruning for this expansion.
    Mother pus bucket!

I hope they are not as unbalanced as DK when they were luanched. I dont know if you remember those lvl59 battlefields.... xD

It's a lore thing. A "hero class" is meant to be a class that wouldn't make sense to start at level 1, and generally needs some kind of special context to make sense. Like someone said, if a level 1 novice Death Knight or Demon Hunter pops up in Elwynn, it raises some questions. Monks, on the other hand, fit in easily enough.

as for "why they dont start at level one"

it would feel weird to play a demon hunter, come out of legion... where the legion is attacking... then suddenly the cataclysm is a big issue with deathwing... who has been dead for along time now

then go to the burning crusade and kill your master... all the while killing your fellow trainees and maybe even yourself

then go to wrath of the lichking and deal with the lichking, long since dead

then go back to fighting deathwing

then go to pandaria fighting garrosh who has long been dead

then go kill archimonde in hellfire citidal, sending guldan off to take illidan, and cause the wardens to wake up the demon hunters... where you wake up then go to azeroth and fight deathwing... all the way to 100 where guldan frees you, then you go to fight deathwing till you reach 100, and deathwing frees you...

see the issue? it was the same with DKs

starting zone= Oh no the lich king we must defeat him!

lol no, time to deal with illidan... lich king? idk hes been gone for like 10 years dont worry about him weird... warrior? we gotta kill illidan! northrend? what? that frozen wasteland? what about it? lichking raising a army?PFFT yeah no lets just deal with illidan...

hero class originally was a class that was very powerful... but then they realized.. oh wait balancing... so its become more of "do they start at level 1? no, ok hero class"
as idk if you know but dks were INSANLY powerful...

Why? Because nobody wants to start at level 1 anymore.

no because they wouldent make sense... why would a death knight awake to go fight cthun, and ragnaros... then illidan, THEN the lich king awakens and makes you, and the other death knights...

Maybe because being an elite soldier of the Illidari, a proven slayer of Demons and fel-infused warrior, as a level 1 character would be complete nonsense.

Amazing sig, done by mighty Lokann

Because you don't begin your journey as a Demon Hunter in lore, you BECOME a Demon Hunter through a ritual. Demon Hunters, just like Death Knights, were other classes in their life before being recruited into the Illidari and became a Demon Hunter.

    I agree with that.

I mean if they wanted to make you do the whole leveling thing...imagine having to start at Lv1 as a mage/rogue/warrior then at a certain point 80-90+ levels later be given your wings and become a DH.

Would be fun, but weird too

As I vaguely recall, that was the original idea for the death knight hero class. You'd level a conventional character to whatever level they were planning at the time and then you could get a quest to become a death knight on that character. They eventually scrapped that idea and went with starting death knights at 55, with their own starting experience, so long as you had a comparably leveled character on the server.
That is not dead which can eternal lie.
And with strange aeons even death may die.

    maybe on a dead server.

on my servers *everyone* had a deathknight. They might have raided with a different character, cuz having nothing but tanks and melee doesn't get you too far in raids... but that didn't stop them from having a DK alt waiting in the wings.

If you raided... at least one of the tanks was a DK.

Since his plan was to just mass-produce Demon Hunters with a complete disregard for how many died during the training, Illidan probably wouldn't have cared what level (so to speak) his recruits were.

Having said that, yes, Demon Hunters attacking Furbolgs and Murlocs at level 1 would be a bit iffy. On the other hand, I suspect starting at 98 is going to lead to a disproportionate number of Demon Hunters, as there are people who will decide they don't want to level 109 or 55 levels. At the very least Death Knights' starting level should probably be adjusted to match Demon Hunters. It's weird and more than a little unfair for one hero class to start at 55 and another at 98.

My, very limited, understanding is a hero class is someone who died / was a hero already.
Normal classes are those that "build up" to be a hero.

A DK and DH already were hero's.

Blizzard's definition has simply been that hero class = class that doesn't start from level 1.
