Firearms are not illegal in germany in general, they are regulated. (though the one he used was illegal because the ID was removed and he didnt have a firearms license ). Ever heard of "blackmarket"?

-Apparently the gun was a decorative piece. (The parts were removed). He either restored it to working condition himself, or had someone else do it.
-He was planning this attack for over a year.
-He also wrote a manifesto.
-He visited Winnenden were a School shooting took place and took pictures.

And the news out now is that like any nation with sane people in charge (i.e. not the US), Germany is looking to tighten up its gun laws to make it harder for bad guys to acquire one. Given what all prior evidence has shown the number of Gun deaths in Germany will drop in the future as a result.
