Pretty much this.
All of those terrible things we hear about right now have always happened. There were axe maniacs, bombers and shooters before, it's just since 9/11 everyone went cuckoo about terrorism and somehow a 'religion-related knife attack' is more terrifying than any of the other knife attacks. Fear mongering by the media made us believe that for some reason all of our lives are suddenly in danger and that the western civilization is nearing its end - it's not. In Europe, there was always terrorism - ETA and IRA has the unspeakably greater bodycount than ISIL has and will have in a long time. That doesn't mean we should just shrug, of course, it just means that it's nothing new and the only reason we're constantly hearing about this is that it sells well. Headlines sell well. Murder has always been selling well, the only topic that used to be more popular was celebrity gossip. Now? Terrorism is the new fad, ufnortunately.
