In the land of the free, 1% of the population is incarcerated

Jim Jefferies may be a comedian, but he sure hits the spot. 1 in every 100 americans is in jail. Thats not even a joke, thats a fact.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarc..._United_States.

"but thats only one percent, thats not alot"

Yeah it is. You have 698 adult prisoners per 100.000 citizens (U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics). That's astronomically high compared to the rest of the developed Western world. It puts you a tier above free countries like Cuba, Rwanda, Turkmenistan, El Salvadar and Belize.

    Austria - 96
    Belgium - 105
    Canada - 106
    Denmark - 61
    Finland - 57
    France - 100
    Germany - 78
    Italy - 86
    Japan - 49
    Netherlands - 75
    Spain - 140
    Sweden - 60

On average you have 800% more criminals.

So with freedom and stuff in the american national anthem, do americans know they are possibly one of the least free countries in the western world? How do you as an american feel about this? Did you know in "the land of the free" they have the least ammount of free people?

And what is the problem? Don't do crap, and be a free a man. It's that simple.

The "free" in Land of the Free is not in regards to incarceration.

    So..

Are we suppose to identify with criminals and feel bad for them?

We have one of the most capable law enforcement systems in the world.

Then that means 1% are criminals. Obey the law and do not become one of the 1%.

How about we start analyzing some retarded laws, like ones that will turn teenagers experimenting with marijuana into hardened criminals?

Or are we still under the delusion that all laws are just if it's a law?

That's crazy! Isn't the U.S. number 1 among developed countries in incarceration per capita?

State issue. Marijuana is barely illegal, just say your shoulder hurts and you get a cannabis permit.

Certain demographics commit a significant amount of crime, so what's your point?

Ever since prisons were privatized there's been pushes for harsher sentences by lobbyists to fill up the prisons, to make money for prison investors.

This is a VERY stupid thread, based off a comedians JOKE.

The thing about being in jail...is you broke the fucking law. Very few of them do not belong there. We can argue about unjust laws all day, but when the sun sets, they are still laws and if you break em, you go to jail.

Until such a time that the unjust laws are removed or rectified, they are still laws, if you do not abide them, you go to jail.

What about all of the people still in prison because of laws that have been repealed, or for cannabis usage?

As I said, this is more than just a single law that's the issue here. There's a lot of stupid laws on the books that turns normal citizens, who either needed a slap on the wrist or nothing at all, who are now hardened criminals because all they know is jail and other criminals.

Okay, so we should just leave people who aren't bad people in jail to rot, rather than beginning to analyze case files and seeing who does and does not deserve to be in prison still.

    Cool.

Yep. For example Mexicans are poorer than Americans. Being poor increases the probability of crime. They migrate to the USA thus have higher crime rates. It isn't rocket science.

The only way to solve that is dont migrate anyone from poorer countries.

So how do you have the highest % of incarceration? Are americans more criminal than other countries?

So you have significantly more criminals than other countries is what you're saying? Seems like a bit of a problem eh?

I am all for that. Changing those laws. But the majority of those in prisons for crimes, I bet deserve it.

In other words, 99% of all Americans are NOT in jail! Hooray!

Yeah because the USA has had more migration from poor regions. Though Europe is doing their damndest to catch up.

I didnt say, nor did I imply that, I only stated that until such a time that unjust laws are fixed, breaking them can result in jail time. It sucks but thats life. None of these "unjust" laws, are secret after all, or are things you just slip into on accident. Its a willful choice to break them.

I dont know, nor really care. All those people (save a few truly innocent folks) broke some law, thats their problem, not mine.

We could also analyze our punitive system, since a lot of other countries employ rehabilitation systems, and only apply harsh jailing sentences for people who are obviously beyond redemption. Otherwise there are a lot of people who are good people who just break a law, and can be rehabilitated to never do it again. Redaction rates in those countries are low, making crime overall much less of an issue.

Meanwhile in the US we just throw em in prison for 30 years, then release them into the world with $40, no friends, no family, and their only other contacts are other criminals. Guess how often that ends in them going back to prison.

So hard line conservatives believe in harsh sentences, that if you break a law you "deserve" whatever punishment you're given, meanwhile other countries employ methods that see far lower redaction (repeat) offenses by rehabilitating.

I'd say the US deserves its elevated crime rates for all of the criminals we give deserving punishment.
