I have all of them but I think I only paid full price for one. My favourite is probably the reaver.

Of course everything has to be coded in. Mounts, even if they share the same skeleton/template, they have individual IDs tied to collections, achievements, vendors (in this case cash shop). There is also the fact that they have to work on several assets at the same time. Creating every single mount from scratch would be terrible practice and we would not have the insane amount of mounts to choose from that are already in game, outside of the cash shop. It's clear you have an understanding of the process, but that makes it all the more puzzling as to why you would say it takes less than a week.
I still have to disagree with you in thinking this is a minute task for a team of artists, considering the polish a lot of these creations have. So... Agree to disagree.
I won't buy a cash shop mount (or pet) because I refuse to support microtransactions in this type of game. I guess I am too oldschool and don't like the way game companies are monetizing their products these days.
However, I can't deny that many of those cash shop mounts are amazing, which no doubt is why they ended up on the cash shop rather than being put in game somewhere. Were I to win a contest or something where I could pick a free cash shop mount as prize I would go with the Runesabre, or maybe the Fey Dragon.
I don't buy cash shop mounts out of protest for the utter joke that mounts were in WoD compared to previous expansions. Unique models and faction-relevant mounts went up for sale, and we got the same shitty boar mounts that used a badly-fitted triceratops skeleton thrown every which-way in seven shades of shit-brown. Rinse and repeat for every other mount in WoD, with the only standouts being the garish fel-green ones from Tanaan and the raid mounts. Even the best-at-PvP-in-the-world Gladiator mounts all looked like generic half-digested orc shit.
You can't eyeball a mount other than the ones from Tanaan and the ones from the cash shop in WoD and tell where it came from unless you've got Rain Man levels of memorization based on which mildly-differentiated shade of brown they are, whereas nobody's going to confuse a Shado-Pan tiger with a Tillers goat or a Golden Lotus crane or a Nat Pagle water strider.
So, yeah. It isn't that money's a problem, because I buy Overwatch loot crates in ten-packs like a porn addict buys lube, it's that I'm waiting for Blizz to start putting mounts worth chasing after that don't require being bribed into raiding back into the game.
Be seeing you guys on Bloodsail Buccaneers NA!
I defend the practice 100% because guess what?, its not cutting corners.
It is 100% optional. No one is forcing you to buy anything out of the cash shop. They create those mounts for people who don't mind spending a few bucks to have a highly unique cool mount. I can't tell you how many times people have asked me where i got my grinning reaver mount and asked how to get one.
They are head turning mounts that are optional.
Same. I'm only interested in mounts as signifiers of things I have done in-game (completed achievements, got reps to exalted, killed bosses, etc.)
No interest whatsoever in a mount that you just get by pulling out your wallet. Even if I was 1000x richer than I am and the price was impossible to even notice, rather than just "not an issue".
None. During a big christmas sale I went crazy and bought like 115€ worth of that. It's nothing when you have a solid job, but still I regret it. Never again. At least my collection is more complete I'm telling to myself, which is someting ok to monetize when you have a game like wow. Which is why I'm not against cash shops but I don't want to pay for optional content. Spending ridiculous amounts of gold on the other hand, is not a problem.
I'd prefer if cash shops were shortcuts instead of exclusive things. Boost is a shortcut, the wow token also if you don't want to grind gold, it should be expanded to other services.

Money's not in issue. Animation is.
Money is not an issue, bought them all, looking forward to more.
FOMO: "Fear Of Missing Out", also commonly known as people with a mental issue of managing time and activities, many expecting others to fit into their schedule so they don't miss out on things to come. If FOMO becomes a problem for you, do seek help, it can be a very unhealthy lifestyle..
For each one of you saying you would never drop cash for a mount in the shop, I'll bet there are plenty more people standing in line in your place to throw their money at Blizzard. Buy them or not, Blizzard is getting their money. I get it though, at least your conscience is clear.
OT: I bought the Warforged Nightmare. It's one of my favorites.
Got all of them already with the 50% discount they had over the years.
Lol are you trying to brag about owning 250 dollars worth of baddie store mounts? Do you realize I own vinyl figures worth more than 250 dollars? Lol...
I take it you're trolling plus I already know you're not all there, or anywhere close to even halfway there, but see my signature if you need further explanation.
But they are not the same mounts. In the OP it even says "only bat mount" for example. The don't want to make more, because the people that REALLY want a bat as a amount will have other options than buying it from their store. By not making any more bat mounts, they essentially ensure that people have to pay real money to get one.
Have bought several of them all. For myself and presents to friends and guildies. Same with all pets.
My Troll rides the bat since it's the only bat mount available.
My Draenei pally rides the Celestial Steed (space pally!) and occasionally the fae dragon (since it seems to be a Draenei mount in WoD).
No particular use for any of the others atm. I choose mounts that match my character concepts, regardless of whether they're store mounts or raid drops or whatever hoops I need to jump through to get them.

I don't mind buying from the store - out of boredom sometimes when I'm at work - but I agree they probably shift some stuff there as a monetary move. The Celestial Steed is the most obvious example. Surely that was inspired by Algalon, and was probably supposed to be a reward for killing one of the most challenging bosses ever (when he was current). I imagine we were supposed to get him when Algalon succumbed and sent us racing to transmit the message that would prevent the planet being reset. Then someone on the business end of Blizz saw the art and said "No - this is a money maker." Was that unfair to anyone? Idk. The mount would be much more exclusive if we'd had to kill Algalon for it. Even at the end of WoLK, Algalon was a tougher kill than Arthas imho. You'd have players farming the mount now, perhaps as a 1% drop the way they do Invincible.

I kind of lol at all the talk about money and whether we should pay for store stuff, etc. Seriously? Does the average WoW player not have money to go to the movies? Because hour-for-hour, playing WoW is 100x cheaper than going out to the movies. Pretty darn cheap entertainment, even if you do splurge on something from the store occasionally.
"I Am Vengeance. I Am The Night. I Am Felfáádaern!"
Bet blizz loves suckers like you.
