"Sony has responded to today's influx of No Man's Sky gameplay videos by essentially describing the on-disc version of the game as unfinished. The company's statement confirms that "a significant pre-release patch" will go live on Monday, August 8, and it will represent "a culmination of the studio’s day-1 aspirations."

Edit: Only online discoveries are being wiped from server apparently. So progress shouldn't really be lost though its hard to say if its just a miscommunication or not.

To me it sounds like a lie and coverup to save sales. Even if they patch the game on day 1, it wont change much (mostly just performance update). They never add any more content (exeption is day 1 dlcs).
    Don't sweat the details!!!

It's the usual practice with retail releases. In the past Gold master was practically always not finished product because it had to be made several weeks prior to the release - so it had bugs. Later with the rise of torrents this fact became a way to fight piracy by putting an unfinished or even broken game on the disc and then releasing day 0 patch. Those few (I cannot stress this enough, there are so few of those - they don't matter) without internet could refund or exchange their unfinished copy for a finished copy which is re-released after the initial release or wait for a special edition release or come to a friend with internet and download the patch to a flash drive.
All right, gentleperchildren, let's review. The year is 2024 - that's two-zero-two-four, as in the 21st Century's perfect vision - and I am sorry to say the world has become a pussy-whipped, Brady Bunch version of itself, run by a bunch of still-masked clots ridden infertile senile sissies who want the Last Ukrainian to die so they can get on with the War on China, with some middle-eastern genocide on the side

Thus far all planets have life, and that doesn't make it very interesting.

Another mechanic that was mentioned was the day and night cycles being caused by planetary rotation and the position of the star. This isn't the case and the orbit doesn't seem to be the case either.

People haven't seen enough to show that there are no barren planets or ringed planets, but I doubt they are in the game.

A lot of the activity you see in the trailers isn't present in the streams, such as the animals effecting the foliage, wingmen, herding animals etc.

This isn't really a new practice either, and it isn't confined to Hello Games. Even Blizzard has made trailers with mechanics that were never in the game, and many other companies show trailers where it isn't gameplay footage but scripted smoke and mirrors to get you excited. Or a graphic level that simply isn't in the game.
In regards to the 90%/10%/1% comment. It's entirely possible that the people playing the game already have just gotten lucky. Even then, 1% of 18q planets is still ALOT of planets.

Well shit. At least it's confirmed now I guess. Apparently it's 21:9 support, but why delay the game for that?
Got to keep that 0.1% happy I suppose ;p

They say shit like this every time a game gets spoiled early and is disappointing and its always horseshit
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

It's absolutely a PR move. They aren't going to add in core features that are missing in a Day 1 patch. People should be smart consumers, consider the release date to really be the 13th or 14th, and wait for the Day 1 patch plus reviews. Nothing any company publishes gets posted without it going through the gamut of PR personnel. Nothing! Emails and facebooks get hacked and then we see what a company really believes about a product or person. Reference, "Fuck that loser".

Not a single core feature is missing from the game as can be seen in leaked videos.

Kotaku apparently had a "lifeless body" planet in their stream. http://kotaku.com/we-named-a-planet-...sky-1784882446

If there really are that many planets and stuff then even a few streamers is a small sample size.

They will probaly still work if you are offline and not allowing the game to update.

lol this game is becoming a joke.

Physical console versions of games always leak week+ before release date and never once has a developer ever tried to wipe progress with a day 1 patch.

If you wanted the game to not work before release date then you should have required the servers to be up to use it and to not bring them up until midnight on release day. Since it behaves like 90% of console single player games you should leave it alone.

People keep trying to list Sony here but Sony has never done the practices in the past with any of their first party games. This is all on Hello Games, and Sony is just eating the PR backlash from their disaster.

Which is literally pointless since a big part of the game is your character discovering planets, animals and fauna and having your name put to those discoveries for everyone else to see.

The only joke are the special snowflakes who thought they were gaming the system by getting the game early. I find it pretty funny and a bit of justice that none of these people get any of their work recognized before everyone else has a chance at playing.

    You look a little green.

Jealousy is an awful trait, instead of being mad people are playing before you maybe take a step back and realize they're just enjoying themselves the same way you will be.

This is not an MMO, this is not some online competitive game. They gain nothing by progressing early. So the only reason anyone would be mad about it is they're jealous. /shrug

The funny thing is the special snowflake comment. Like NMS is the only game to ever have physical copies leak early when it happens all the time and no company ever invokes some anti consumer policy like this.

So what about those people who get the game and start playing it before the patch DLs on day 1? Then they find out once they exit their first sit down and come back later their entire game is gone when the patch is completed. GREAT consumer practice by these guys by wiping any save done on the base physical disc before patch is installed.

Exploration and naming stuff is the MMO part of the game. It's only logical cheaters are gonna be wiped.

Wouldn't it be delightful if instead of saying a non committal PR tweet like "the leaked version isn't the game you'll get on Tuesday", we got "X and X feature missing from the leaked version will be implemented with the update". The lack of transparency is a telling sign that other than a few bug fixes, the leaked version is almost certainly the majority of what we will see after the patch. Just a bland exploration game with features and mechanics shown in demo's that were never added to the game. I really hope this is incorrect boys, but I think we've been hoodwinked by these Brits again!

Oh yea, that head start of them naming something no one else likely ever encounters.

They could also wipe all of that without nuking save files, so invalid point right off the bat.

Not to mention if they where smart they wouldn't have had the servers up yet in the first place for naming shit to even begin.

The game in it's current state being played is as it was when it went Gold back in July. The day 1 patch is only fixes and stuff they have done in the 3 weeks since it went gold. People actually are believing the BS and think 3 weeks of development time is going to add something significant to the game lol...

I agree. However, with the design of the game being procedural, a few tweaks to values could change the game dramatically. I just don't think that will happen.
