No, it is not. Since you were using the water and ship metaphor. Think of it like this - the sea is the Nether. The Ship (that is leaking) is Outland. The air is Great Dark Beyond / physical universe / reality. That's how Outland is. It's floating on top of water, partly in the sea, and partly not. Stepping out of it far enough and you will fall into water, but the ship / Outland isn't under the sea / inside the Nether yet.

It was stated and implied multiple times in "Illidan" that Outland is still part of reality (the physical universe). The Nether exists outside of reality. If Outland is fully in the Nether, it shouldn't be part of reality any longer.

You have a source cause as far as I'm concerned : Illidan Stormrage was the self-proclaimed Lord of Outland, ruling from the Black Temple. He was born a night elf and, as stated by Maiev Shadowsong, became "neither night elf nor demon, but something more". He is the twin brother of Malfurion Stormrage and was in love with Tyrande Whisperwind.

The Illidan book explains that you can either consume the soul, warlocks shards, soul rituals, demon hunters. Destroy them in the nether, and their soul will be lost for infinity.

Illidan remained hungry for magic, and he was certain that with the skull's power, he would be able to overcome the Legion forces in Felwood. Despite his suspicions about Arthas' motives, Illidan therefore stole the artifact and consumed it, taking its powers for himself. Already marked by Sargeras back in the War of the Ancients, Illidan was instantly transformed into a demon when he consumed the skull's fel energies.

Rather than atone for his questionable tactics, he embraced fel magic and became a demon—a necessary evil to destroy the Legion.

Illidan also refers to himself as owning an "immortal demon soul" during the Demon Hunter starting experience, and as this is the most recent lore it must be taken as the most relevantly canon.

If killing demons during the DH intro experience is permanent, why don't DHs die permanently if they choose to sacrifice themselves?

Because that would be quite hilarious.

I thought Mardum was in the TN?

The whole sacrifice yourself and then Illidan chats with you felt kind of stupid.

The Demon Hunter being able to die and return is canon though, because Illidan speaks to you when it happens.
This is proof that Mardum is not a place that demons can permanently die, and as there's nobody anywhere in the game that says otherwise, I don't see why we wouldn't accept that as true.

Literally nothing except guessing says "demons should die here" (surely one of the Demon Hunters would have mentioned that important information?), whereas there is canonical evidence that they can't (the player character).
It's... just the most reasonable option to assume that means that Mardum does not count as one of those places. Whether this be because it's insufficiently fel-suffused, lacks some essential property that Nathrezar and Argus have (perhaps something that must be intentionally constructed so that demons can reform there instead of the nether?), or simply because it isn't a planet any more and thus the fel is actually not all that concentrated.

But have you seen the other demon hunter again, if you chose to sacrifice him instead of yourself?

Not all DHs are demonic enough to have a demon soul, though. Otherwise, if every DHs have a demon soul, it wouldn't make sense for Illidan to find it interesting that you also have an immortal demon soul like he does. That poor sacrificed DH might still keep his mortal soul then.

He wanders around your class hall and says the others can't see him. Can't get back to his body from the nether for some reason.
