Too bad HotS squanders it's virtually perfect game design with the most expensive, stingy, and pay-for-advantage business model.
Winner obvious after 20? You've not watched much Dota 2 then. There's loads of crazy comebacks. More recently this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fy8ajjErck

Play the tutorials for starters, it'll earn you some free gold. I'll go more into detail regarding gold further down.

I would say tank is the absolute best. You're forced to learn positioning the hard way, which will improve your play immensely in other roles. You could probably start with Muradin since he's free to play this week. Other tanks for other weeks that are solid starter heroes would be someone like Johanna and ETC. Johanna is nigh-invincible once you learn to play her right, and ETC can turn any game around.

When you have a good feel for it, branch out and try the other heroes on the free rotation. If possible, attempt to get all of the free heroes to level 5 each week. It'll supply you with a solid amount of gold to get started on your hero collection. Don't buy heroes that you haven't already played to level 5 and like to play, you don't want to waste gold this early on.

Once you start to want more, watch streamers and youtube videos. Also the tournaments, you see some awesome combination work and hero synergies that you can bring into your own games, and hopefully rek some noobs!

Hopefully you'll enjoy your time. It's a great game, and the average match length is short enough to play often when you have a small break from real life worries. See you in the Nexus!

    If you are considering roles:

    Assassin:
Raynor: Just the easy character for beginners. You can learn stutterstepping and aiming skillshots as well as buffing your allies. Both his ults do damage.
Thrall: One of the best base kits in the game for a melee hero. Has some sustain and lots of CC as melee assassin so its not too punishing for beginners.

Warriors: ETC and Muradin are cheap heroes and are at the top of the metagame these days due to their CC and initiation tools. Both have stuns, some self healing tools and mobility. ETC even has one of those game changing heroics (Mosh pit). The other alternative is a global heroic.

    Support:
Li Li: Incredibly easy to play, and has some damage options
Malfurion: harder to play effectively, but has a lot of tools to counter things. He has CC, poke, a choice between aoe silence or AOE heal (both counter burst damage).

I don't recommend to start with specialists unless you grasp the three roles mentioned above or are looking for something realy different to play..

I'm going to second or third or whatever Raynor.

He was my first pick up and still probably my favorite to play. Easy to pick up.

The only reason this game has been relevant at all is because it is made by Blizzard and has Blizzard characters in it. If it were made by any other company nobody would play it after 3 months.
    Classical LoL/Dota fanboy.
When game is similar to LOL,all i hear is " LoL ripoff ! there is nothing new here",when game is different..."omg this game is not LoL,it SUX" - ...
If this game was another shameless Dota/LoL clone why should people play another similar game to dota/lol ? When i can play the original two?

I do not play either Lol or Dota and don't care about the games or the companies behind them. In fact, if I am going to start up a MOBA nowadays, it's going to be HotS. The only fanboy here is you, and you provided nothing of value. Everything I said is true, and I am not sure why you felt the need to necro this.

I have many issues with the game(strong healing, the op objective,no viable alternate methods to advance in matches that are not deathball oriented(like split pushing, jungling etc.) and others) but the games are comprised of many elements, you don't have to like everything 100% to like a game.

But the problem is many people just want another dota/lol copy. For example this quote.

In LoL you get items and do item builds to make your champion more powerful. In Heroes, you use a talent system to add perks to abilities as well as power. I just like that idea better. Changes the way your abilities work and there is still a diversity to the different builds you can do. Opposed to just adding items to your build that just increase the power of the ability and never changing it. Its just more unique to me.
I think the talent system they have is really well made. I am not saying it is better then LoL's system. But LoL's isn't better either.

Also, Auriel is not an irrelevant character. She isn't in the games, but part of the lore. That's like saying why is Regar earth fury relevant because he is not really in WoW.
There isn't room for another moba game styled in the direction of LoL/Dota at this current time.
Dawngate, Strife and HoN were too similar to LoL and Dota2. And they all now are dead. The MOBA market is too crowded and if you aren't making something unique like Smite or HotS you are bye bye.

Actually the game has viable other strategies, but it doesn't work in pub games because most players are unable to grasp and play around that strategy.

Actually this can exist only in pub matches. Every pro play game in HOTS is a 5 man death ball from the 7-10 minute mark onward. Yes, when fighting against unskilled players you can split-push, merc push and do some cool things - but once you fight against a competent team, its deathball or lose.

Not really. Most pro teams utilize globals to split push because they are simply superior to your traditional Azmodan who is easy to punish.

In 75% of pub games you can't do that on global because your team just won't let you finish that last minion wave or destroy a building before you join them as they mindlessly throw themselves into 4v5 just to blame you 4 seconds later. As you said, lame Specialists work only against bad teams, but globals are broken if played around it. Yet, playerbase doesn't understand it.

I just don't understand why people even want to sit and lasor buildings on Azmodan while avoiding all interaction with players in a PvP game. I really hope it never becomes a valid strategy as it is frustrating to play with and annoying to play against.

Are you referring to XP soaking again? It doesn't count as split push but simply another aspect of deathball so there is no split push in the game at all.

Bladerr for what reason did you resurrect an old thread? The time of your response to the one before was nearing a year. Go do something productive.

Please, go watch some Korean games with Illidan players dealing over 100k siege damage.

Before Hots I never even wanted to try Moba games but when I got the beta invite I thought "sure I'll give it a try" and I still love the game even with its flaws. It's great fun!
