sheet music or learn by hearing a song?

So I know we have some musicians on these boards. How do you learn songs? Do you need sheet music or are you able to learn by hearing the song? Personally I need sheet music.

I think good musicians can and should be able to do both.

Depends on the instrument, arrangement, complexity, skill level. Both I suppose but the question isn't specific enough.

What kind of music? And what kind of instrument?

I have a friend that can drum damn near any beat to a song after like 30 seconds of listening to it. Pisses me off.

sheet music is only needed for hip hop

If I need to learn 20 songs in week, I listen to each song 3 or 4 times, and write down the structure.
Bars in each section / any sig changes etc.

I don't rely on sheet music, then again, I'm a drummer so what do I know.

Fairly easy to do as a drummer to be honest

If it's a pop song...tech death or fusion jazz, not so much.

Not classically educated (only some very little time when I was a wee Perryn) so I generally learn the song by listening, could use sheet music but it'd generally be much slower as I am not reading it as fluently as I should (not really bothering too either, however).

I generally write my own music though so not often I have a need to pick up somebody else's works, in any case.

I learned by ear and testing. Cannot read basic music sheets that well. Everything comes from testing and trying but I really cannot play instruments that well. Lil bit ocarina, quitar, flute and piano. Making music with computer is more my thing :P

I do both for piano. Sheet music only gets you so far

both i'd say, both ears and sheet

i have been making music for about 13 years, both on Guitar, drums, piano sax and the trumpet.. And yet, i still cant read sheet music

so i simply use my ears for it, and its working out very well

but it has its downsides tho, whenever i listen to the radio, i know how to play 70%+ of the songs -.- just by listening to it.. THAT pisses me of, cuz' I've pretty much ruined my "radio experience" so to speak..

Here is Lefty and I playing a song that i made

he has been playing 30++ years, i have played for 13, guess whos me!

    (Shameless plug here!)

Anyway, learn both if you can, and just be sure you have good ears, then you are golden!

Maybe not 100% correctly, but definitely passable, and that's all you need 90% of the time.

I'm not a serious musician. It's just a hobby. My largest regret, musically, is not learning to read music/theory as a kid. I just learned stuff by ear or the occasion usage of tabs for reference.

laggspike: That was very nice. Don't think I'll hazard any guesses as to who's playing when but very enjoyable listen regardless.

    Thanks!
