I'd spit it out personally. If you're an asthmatic you can end up with a nasty chest infection and have a hard time breathing.

coughing up the mucus is your bodies way of getting rid of it, swallowing it is basically telling your body to go fuck itself.
take some mucinex and whatever other cold medicines you like and a hot shower can also do wonders for getting it out. i usually wake up with a somewhat hard time breathing when i get sick and until i shower and cough some of that stuff up i feel like a midget with very little arm strength is trying to slowly strangle me.
