There are bad, strange or embarrassing people on every website; there are also a multitude of people who don't fit that description either. 4chan and tumblr have bad reps, but neither are entirely the festering hellpits that their reputations make them out to be, albeit for different reasons.

I would disagree with the fact that tumblr is worse than 4chan, for the simple fact that 4chan houses some downright illegal, morally questionable or just generally messed up stuff, which is why it's vilified - tumblr, on the other hand, is hated because there's a lot of teenagers with special snowflake syndrome occupying it, who want to make the world better, but go about it in a spectacularly terrible way. (Not that tumblr is free of its own questionable stuff, mind you...)

You could argue at length which is the worst; I personally don't see why a bunch of self-entitled teenagers is objectively worse than the unholy amalgamation of content 4chan manages to generate, but that's just me. One is annoying, the other is vaguely concerning; moreover, what you access on tumblr is limited by who you follow - though it's true enough that what you see on 4chan is limited by what you actively seek. You will see the worst that those sites have to offer if you choose to look for the worst, as with any site. As with the MMO-Champion forums, even, which I'd almost say have a poor reputation themselves nowadays.

All that said, though... No, they're certainly not the worst that the internet has to offer, and as that is the case, I pray I never have the misfortune of witnessing the internet at its extremes.

Well written, I read this all.

You know, reddit also has a nasty reputation nowadays but I don't know anything of that.

About three years ago I just visited both these sites on a meaningless "dare" from a geeky friend who said they're the scariest sites the internet has to offer and I would regret it. While there's some relatively higher etiquette and cultural barriers at play that aren't made apparent to the average person, I integrated rather amazingly quickly because of some high familiarity with certain mediums. However, it should be noted I only visit niche, lighthearted funny image section of tumblr and video game general, comics, and anime boards of 4chan. I'm fully aware of the more unpleasant (horrific) parts of these sites and the transparent consequences of misbehaving, but I never had issues once.

So forward three years later to now, I've at least improved in general on internet manners and grown a thicker spine but I just find this whole situation weird now. I expect the most notorious websites ever conceived to not house normal people either, and find it bizarre how over time I've come to even know certain people from long-term browsing and they never come across as out of the ordinary when I interact with them in games.

In conclusion: Yes there are terrible aspects to these sites, but with how relatively average the "normal" sides of them seem and how not everyone is insane or sociopathic, I can't really grasp why they're so notoriously feared.
Nah, check out 8chan, stormfront, etc.

Also, head over to /d/ on 4chan, they'll set you up nice and good.

You are using tumblr wrong then. My tumblr consists of endless porn and nothing else, no sjw crap, no brain dead news reports, no media degradation, just straight up hot guys doing things only hot guys do. And the occasional cooking recipe.

/b/ can be bad. I like /v/, /co/ and others.

The worst of the internet is on tor.

Only board I visit on 4chan is /int/ as you can actually learn a lot of things from other countries.

those 2 sites are not scary, i bet theres plenty of scary shit on the dark web which is why its hidden, worst thing ive seen on 4chan is prolly the original rick roll

Like others have said, it depends on the board. S

Some are really well structured with smart people and generally free of shitposting like /lit/ and /sci/.

    The only boards that I ever go on are /f/, /gif/, /hr/, /vg/, /wg/, /adv/, /biz/, /ck/, /fa/, /fit/, /int/, /lit/, /mu/, /out/, /sci/, /trv/ and /tv/

4chan and Tumblr are most definitely terrible... But c'mon, they're mainstream and this is the Internet. One of the cardinal rules of the Internet is that no matter how bad things look on the surface, there's always something worse hidden away.

And if you go and find it, there's gonna be something worse than that, and something worse than that, and something worse than that, until you find a page so unfathomably cringy that your feeble mortal mind cannot handle it and you are compelled to NOPE out.

Not that it was that bad even back then, but it's not 2005 anymore and 4chan is really not that bad a site, in terms of what kind of things you can find there. The quality of the content though is quite bad, at least depending on what boards you go on. Despite being on the site since 2006 I've actually never really visited many boards that frequently. /b/ never interested me so even from the start I mostly just stuck to /a/ and sometimes /v/. While it does definitely come with it's downsides, the anonymity is what I really enjoy about the site as it allows people to say what they really think and feel. Of course this does have it's downsides with all the shitposting that sometimes happens but I still think the really interesting conversations you sometimes get more than make up for it.

And of course, it being an imageboard is also a huge part of why I like it. I'm a bit of a collector and so I like to save and post all kinds of official and fan art of the shows I enjoy. And sometimes just having a thread full of cute 2d girls is enough to brighten your mood, and that's something you're unlikely to find often on most normal forums as they don't move as fast, aren't as suited for quick image posting and don't have the system of threads being deleted/archieved after a while of no posts/hitting the post limit.

The dreaded "SJW" actually does exist there. If you stay away from those tags you really never see them apart from a random rant happening.

No, tumblr is awful because they corrupt everything into porn.

    Nothing is safe.

My girlfriend told me she tried looking up Junkrat drawings. All she got in return was Junkrat/Roadhog porn. That is why I'll never go near tumblr.

Eh porn of any kind really doesn't bother me anymore. The thing that I don't like are rekt threads on 4chan. It takes special kind of evil to enjoy watching others get mutilated and die in horrific ways.

I'd be more concerned that you have a friend daring you to go to 4chan as if it still exists as some kind of boogeyman. Beyond that, I'd actually consider sites like this one worse simply because a more active moderation coupled with lack of anonymity only really encourages being passive aggressive (in the sense that people are still often hostile to one another, but they censor themselves enough to not get infracted). As far as Reddit goes, again, the lack of anonymity and upvote culture only encourages coddling. That and Reddit, at least a good portion of it, still actively attracts the crowd that inject emoticons into all of their sentences and think being artificially "random" is at all funny.
