They're not. You're absolutely right. Most people have no idea what goes on via. TOR. Child porn. Underground markets for drugs, forged documents, identity theft & credit card numbers, heavy weaponry, contract killing, etc... Legit videos of people being tortured and murdered. In-depth tutorials on how to kill people without getting caught, how to build explosives with easy to acquire materials, etc..etc..etc.. The list goes on.

Anyone who thinks people saying racist stuff on imageboards or forums is the worst thing ever is clueless, racism isn't even the tip of iceberg; it's a snowflake on top of it.

If you remove the whole political discourse from tumblr, it's pretty much deviantart.

Other than that, you have some weird places in some sections of Reddit, Somethingawful, 4chan, etc... but these are mostly just entitled as hell people with little understanding of how the world works. You can obviously find weird people on any online community that can promote echo chamber mentalities, tumblr, twitter and Facebook have way more idiotic/bad content than a lot of the usual suspects.

If you want to see very "fun" things, look up information about Mariana's Web or other stuff like it. I've never been to or plan to ever go exploring that part of the web though.

Well, I don't really see a reason to go there... From what I understand, people are hunting down obscure blogs, or so I would assume, and psyching themselves up about them. To me, that's just a waste of time, effort, and energy.

Something I really appreciate about 4chan is that it is extremely frowned upon to type like a 12 year old. If you use emoticons, you are disregarded. If you say lol, lmao, etc. you are told to fuck off. Years of being around that attitude have made me immediately judge anyone that does this.

Also I'm pretty sure there are a fuckton of subreddits worse than both tumblr and 4chan.
