If the mods want to add it to the list of banned words they'll have to let us know not to use it anymore.

Otherwise I'm of the opinion that words can have their meanings stretched and when the context their used in reflects that we need not take offense per the words original meaning.

I know you weren't asking me, but it's an honest question and to be fair I think it's simply because there's been no better/different name coined to describe them yet. =/ The closest I can think of is "Trailer trash", but that doesn't necessarily focus on the white-supremacist tendencies they do tend to harbor, also "Trailer Trash" could be considered a broad derogatory term for "the rural poor" in general - as many of the the rural poor aren't bad angry people like the "White Trash" are.

Do you realize how similar this language is to racist sentiments like "I only call the bad ones niggers?". It's really not cool.

You didn't answer why they use it. We already know pretty much what it means.

And just because some people use thug as a racist term against all black people doesn't mean the term itself is racist (obviously).

Why? Because they find the beliefs and view points these people hold distasteful. Its certainly a negative term. But it is only used against this group not against all whites or all poor whites in general.

And I never said the term thug is racist. I said when its used against blacks it generally is. Its why its use in this way is not acceptable by most, and is heavily confined to use by racists including those on these boards.

While granting that local dialects vary, the "common everyday" usage of mongrel is to slur mixed-race people. The common everyday usage of "white trash" is to slur low-status white people. The common everyday usage of "wetback" is to slur Hispanic people. That you find some of these terms acceptable and others not is predicated one hundred percent on your personal animus towards the groups being slurred.
