How Gaddafi was tricked by the West (17 min video)

    He certainly was no saint

    - he kicked out most foreigners and closed all US and UK military bases.
    - He confiscated property from the local italians(offspring of the colonisers)

    But...

    - He united over 140 tribes.
    - He basically turned a poverty ridden third world hellhole into a prospering nation.
    - He nationalised oil production and divided the wealth among the population in a "social-esque sharia" system.

He made the mistake of wrapping up his military programmes with the promises of being a full fledged member of the international community.

Ah, the good old narrative: "He was a dictator, but he wasn't all that bad!"

You know you have entered bizzaro land when all Democrats have all turned into George W. Bush supporters.

Before the camps, I regarded the existence of nationality as something that shouldn’t be noticed - nationality did not really exist, only humanity. But in the camps one learns: if you belong to a successful nation you are protected and you survive. If you are part of universal humanity - too bad for you -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

When you are going to make your countries currency gold and only accept gold for oil this might happen.

Ah the good old "He goes against our interests so we will frame him as the next hitler-dictator by the media, bomb his country back into 3rd world status, proudly show pictures of his blood drenched dead body across media and call this Democracy" .

Now Lybia has no governance structure and a permanent civil war. People like you repeat the spoon-fed "evilz dictator" imperative so repeatedly and brainlessly, no matter how often the pattern repeats itself and no matter how many countries turn to ash. Some truly willfully-ignorant vileness at display (there should be a noun for that).

And that evil George Bush not only made peace with him but also got him to abandon terrorism along with his chemical weapons program.

Now the country is a hellhole.

You know, I might not be fully supportive of the way Lybia was handled, but also not cry a river over a dead son of a bitch dictator. I know, hard concept that the world is not black and white, but, I'm sure, you will get it eventually.

Also, no one calls Lybia a democracy. But then, you get your info from Russian TV, so why would you know any better...

I wasn't calling Lybia a democracy, lol. I was calling the western way of handling this "Democracy" as in a "democratic job well done".
This was very obvious but your reading and grasping ability is waaaay too poor.

And quality of life under that "son of a bitch dictator" was hundreds of time better for the people than it is now (if it can even be quantified). Why am I wasting my time with you again?

You seem to forget Pan Am Flight 103 that he blew up above Lockerbie. The uprising against him started because he executed around 1k political prisoners, it was going to be a civil war either way.

No, the only people that claim that Hitler wasn't all that bad are the same people that are supporting Trump because of the similarities.

Ok well that statement was as ignorant as it was entertaining.

Back to reality Hitler and Stalin were viewed as good leaders at the time by their cult of useful idiots.

Fun fact: That was the origin of the phrase "useful idiot".

I love liberal douches who act like the guy with the bigger stick is in the wrong for roflstomping the opposition. The only reason Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan aren't states of the US is sissies like the OP. If you don't like what the US does, stop them from doing it. Good luck!

Canada too but that's another thread all by itself.

Why is closing military bases of foreign nations a negative though?

Lets be realistic. If you're going to do business with the US, you with play with the US or end up becoming a casualty. We're in a post colonial world where the only other superpower no longer exist. There are no real check and balances for the US that the US doesn't impose on itself. Even if the US royally fucked up, any coalition against the US would still have to go through Europe, the Pacific, the northern and southern border of the US before the US even started to quiver. And then you'd have to figure out how to choke the US of the resource rich land that it sits on.

Gaddafi did business with the US and then stopped cooperating, so he got the merked. Suddam got a free pass, stopped cooperating, got merked. Saudi Arab is currently in an oil war with the US because it didn't cooperate, and will get merked or fold. A smart leader, a smart leader wouldn't do business with the only superpower in the world unless is plans to uphold the ideals of said superpower. Gaddafi didn't and paid the price. The after math, a moral speaking point but there isn't an objective answer.

Gaddafi was a dickhead and got what was coming to him. Should the US be held accountable for the aftermath of getting rid of said dickhead? Eh, there really isn't anyone that could hold the US accountable anyway.

If they was truly united he would not need to oppress them, and Lybia would not be in a civil war....

Implying the US would even be interested in having those places as states. What for?
