Seems like a pretty good apology to the Defias, a good way for the Defias to return to the alliance and an excellent way to progress the Westfall story and help out the homeless population there. They are also of very similar age and her assertive personality makes up for his softness.

She never died, it turns out. She is a figure in the rogue class hall, and reveals her death to have been a bit of last minute emergency stagecraft, a special effect produced by one of her poisons to make good her escape from the Deadmines.

Yeah, but kings need an heir, and if a king had an adopted child that eventually became king they would probably never be too well accepted, and/or constantly challenged for the throne. That could also make for some plots in years to come though.
