You seem to underestimate the level of fatigue a lot of Democrats have towards working class whites. Consistently pushing for more comprehensive, more effective social safety nets, higher wages, better social services, only to have future plans stymied and existing plans dismantled because 'hurr, big government' or 'hurr, welfare queens' despite the fact that implementation of such programs would directly benefit said working class whites. I would wager quite a few Democrats view that demographic as so obstinate as to be not worth the time trying to reason with.

The other factor is a lot of the feeling of disenfranchisement is rooted in racism, misogyny, et cetera and pretending that it is a valid viewpoint by attempting to empathise isn't remotely productive, or sane.

I think you might be onto something...maybe...I know someone who benefitted a lot from social programs but supports candidates who would douse the programs in gasoline and light them on fire.

I wasn't a Seal, but I did serve in the Marines. I enjoyed my time as a CBRN specialist and still consider it a valuable life experience. It was my first real introduction to science, and other cultures, and it sparked a passion for it that has lead my to find success as a researcher. Incidentally, citation of credentials is at times necessary to address accusations of ignorance or similar negative associations that forum trolls like to levy in lieu of actual discussion. Now please, cease with the attempts at personal attacks, as they are unbecoming and only serve to lower the standards for discourse on this site.

Don't be disingenous. You selectively read parts of what I wrote,which did not immediately conform to your views and caused you to perceive a threat due to cognitive dissonance. Your response to that threat was to attack me personally rather than engage in mature dialogue. This is sad, and made sadder by the fact that I already clearly pointed out that I neither support Trump nor believe that economic hardship validates his follower's actions. The point I made was that ignoring some of the real problems that give rise to the socioeconomic frustrations which have helped elevate Trump is doing more long term harm than good.

But you came looking for a fight, not a discussion and an open sharing of ideas. The adult thing to do, the un-Trump thing to do, would be to apologize for the personal attack and engage in a reasoned dialogue about our diverging ideas.

Selectively read what your wrote? Yeah, I did but you're not special there. I do that with the vast majority of posts that I see here. What did catch my eye though was you stating your credentials after having posted that absolutely ridiculous article. What makes your posts even more entertaining is your regular call for a high level of discourse but, again, you linked an article that is absolute fluff. How does that follow? You failed to engage with my point, or the primary point of the article, which was not to forgive heinous behavior but to recognize that understanding it's source could prove important to this election. I fear that your hatred for Trump has lapsed into the same kind of irrationality that his followers are all too often guilty of.

And a high level of discourse does not imply that the only ideas or articles discussed are those you agree with or which you choose to highlight for personar entertainment. It pertains to the manner in which a discussion is carried out. Not sure if that's an education issue or just people having selective memories. I know a few folks who used to receive EBT but who, now that they're more succesful, think welfare is "too generous" and needs to be cut.
