Provincial NDP teams are so scarily tied to their federal counterpart though.

In Alberta the provincial NDP's delayed any kind of budget work in 2015 until after the election, to avoid potentially spoiling the federal election results for the NDP. It was beyond frustrating.

They didn't get their asses kicked, NDP voters en masse voted for the Liberal party, to oust the Conservatives.

The NDP party is alive and well and very real here, but they also cannibalize the Liberal vote - and that lead to a decade of handing power to the Conservatives, despite them only representing 3/10ths of the country (the other 7/10th being Left of them, nothing further Right like in the US).
