Most guns used in N.Y. crimes are from out of state: study

    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-ne...-idUSKCN12P2KT

Six out of seven handguns connected to recent crimes in New York state were brought in from elsewhere, the state's attorney general said on Tuesday in a report on suspected gun trafficking along the U.S. East Coast.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said his office had used federal data not available to the public to determine where some 46,514 firearms tied to crimes from 2010 to 2015 had been purchased.

According to the report, some 86 percent of handguns recovered by law enforcement agencies were from out of state.

The report called smuggled guns the weapons of choice for violent criminals.

"This is the gangster's dream gun," Schneiderman said at a news conference, holding up a handgun that he said originated in Florida. "This is the kind of gun that's used to commit crimes."

One in five recovered guns were "recently trafficked," meaning they were confiscated by law enforcement within three years of their purchase or had other indications they were bought for criminal use, the report said. Two other indications, the report said, are whether the person who has the gun when law enforcement recovers it is different than the person who purchased the gun and whether the state of purchase is different than the recovery state.

New York politicians and law enforcement officials have for years denounced what they call an "iron pipeline" of unlawful firearms smuggled north and east from states that have looser gun laws and regulations.

Schneiderman said in a statement the data demonstrated that New York's gun laws "are being undermined at every turn by lax laws in other states."

Virginia, for example, was the origin of 3,249 guns recovered during those years in New York, more than any other state, according to the report.

Terry McAuliffe, Virginia's Democratic governor, wants to reduce the state's role as a source for illegal guns, spokesman Brian Coy said. Coy blamed Republican state lawmakers for rejecting measures such as gun-show background checks and a one-gun-a-month law.

Advocates for gun rights argue that such laws do not deter crime and infringe on the guarantee of gun rights in the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.

Gun control has not fared much better on a national level. In June, the U.S. Senate rejected legislation to further restrict gun sales, a measure that was proposed after a gunman killed 49 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

If people in New york don't like it they can move to London instead.

Who would've thought that gun regulation doesn't work on a regional basis without any sort of border control.

    I DON'T LIKE IT.

I googled states with strictest gun laws a while ago and it surprised me that NY wasn't one of the strictest. But to know 6/7 guns (for crimes) are out of state...that's not right. Let's build a wall.

That would imply anyone is actively trying.

Yeah that is pretty obvious. Its called the "Iron Pipeline". I always use the analogy of closing your screen door when you have a heavy rain blowing inside your house. Yes, New York and Chicago have tough gun laws, but since you can freely drive our interstate system, it is not hard to run guns.

Viceland's Black Market had a good episode on gun running. It goes from people who buy guns legit to people who break into gun stores to get the weapons and then ship them up to New York.

What they showed a great solution was that the ATF deals in all the gun registration in terms of literal paper work. There is no national gun registration, so it is almost impossible to track gun sales throughout the U.S. I know the push back is people think this is intrusion on their 2nd Amendment, which probably leads to out GUN THREAD.

Gun rights advocates know this, but they like to say "criminals don't abide by laws" too often.

    The solution is easy:
Traffic firearms: Life in prison no parole
Commit a violent crime with a firearm: Life in prison no parole
Commit 1st degree murder with a firearm: Death penalty, solitary confinement until carried out.

There used to be a wall, actually. Hence the name "Wall Street".

It's why state/city regulation only benefits the criminals.

So you would support instituting a national law against gun trafficking?

Harsh punishments carried out in a timely manner would help stop crime.

The only reason anybody can attempt to suggest the death penalty doesn't reduce crime is because the death penalty itself rarely (by comparison) ever gets applied, and when it does you've basically got a lifetime to try a thousand different ways to fight it.

And stop and frisk was working fine in NY, but certain people didn't like the fact that other certain people were the ones always found to be in possession of illegal weapons so its all but stopped.

Cops know who the criminals are, go after them!

And you know, the whole risk of an innocent person ending up in death row, and it also being more expansive than prison.

You might have just shattered the world of some posters here; the times I had to read "Look how Chicago is doing with their strict firearm laws, kek!" is too damn high.

Law-abiding citizens have no guns because it's nearly, completely unlawful to possess them in NY. Criminals break the laws that were put in place to limit access to firearms. Law-abiding citizens are the ones who suffer. Wow!
