Best story in a video game?

For story I'd recommend the Mass Effect series, the first 2 Bioshock games, Dragon Age Origins, Morrowind/Oblivion, Divinity: Original Sin, the Witcher series (3 being the best by a long shot IMO) and Wolfenstein: the New Order. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is also a very good character/story driven game.

There's dozens of others that come to mind, but these will suffice.

Far too subjective. What makes a good story? I would say Transformers Devestation has a great story because it recaptures the essence of the old cartoons perfectly. Maybe Doom (Doom 4) due to its simple story and main character who literally gives no fucks about a story and just wants to shoot, much like the player who wants to play Doom.

Witcher 3 def has a great story in the traditional sense. when Geralt found Ciri on that island for the first time I was like OOOOHHHHhhhh fuck... Geralt are you going to be okay?

Mass Effect has a great story overall (minus the ending)

Overwatch has an interesting story, but its mostly out of game... can it count?

Witcher 3 is my pick. I also really love the story of Warcraft 3, I would've wished to see it continue in the RTS genre which sadly will not be a case.

Video games as a medium are less about the content of the story, and more about the delivery. For me these games nailed it.

So far the greatest story behind a game I have played was an old RPG called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape:_Torment, and I am sad I don't remember much of it. It is just a feeling of greatness, a game story better than a movie story.

Which GREAT/BREATHTAKING stories am I missing around?

Personally, I really liked Watch Dogs story. It's far better than GTAV, imo (where I don't really see much story at all). But, of course, Mass Effect trilogy is probably the best. I could add Final Fantasy VII to it, were it not that old. When they finally release remake of it, hopefully it will be as good as original and won't lose anything.

The Secret World. I'd fucking kill for Funcom to turn the IP into a franchise exploring the stories of the game-world through all different types of games from different genre's.

They did a bit with the walking simulator that was The Park and while it wasn't necessarily a great game, it was definitely fun to get more of a peak into the stories surrounding one of the iconic locations of TSW.

Yeah, it's too bad the gameplay of TSW was so bad. The story was so fresh and unique in the sea of MMOs.

Telltale's walking dead

I mean it's a game based almost exclusively on the story so ...

Played through a lot of masterpiece (SNES, PS1, ...) but this game truly has its place among those special games, check this game if you love video games
