it's more that Trump's policy are considered laughable by every major economists or outright "what the fuck?" worthy but people still voted him because they wanted the most radical change they could possibly get, or in the case of rural America, bought into the rhetoric of blaming immigrants, gays, muslims, etc for everything and needing to make America more white again.

Exactly? Without any of this swing state nonsense turnout rates would increase a ton. As it is now, there's little point in voting if you aren't in one, you already know who's going to win your state.
