This kind of thing in general seems to have gotten much more common in the last 10 years or so. It's so easy now for connections to be made online and bypass the whole standing on a corner thing. It's got to be 100x harder to catch and stop escorts and prostitutes now for law enforcement, when someone can connect online and go to their house and it all happens behind closed doors. So I think it goes way beyond just the sugar baby/daddy relationships which are also more common now because of that. But they are just a part of the larger sex for money picture at the much more legal end of it.
