It's pretty obvious to see the slur. You don't have to reach for it at all. I don't see any assuming malice and there was no ill intentions, that wasn't even the joke they were trying to make, so why not apologize. Does apologizing make you appear weak or something?

I think some of that back, some smartass probably knew what they were doing but also knew that their supervisors wouldn't catch it. Even then an apology is acceptable.

You said it, it could be precieved as something it's not and that wasn't their intention so they apologized. What is the point of reaching for other explanations for why they saw it fit to apologize, because quite frankly other the other reasons people are throwing are male them look like asses who think you shouldn't apologize for doing something that wasn't intentional.

Do we live in a society where people only apologize to get out of trouble or because they felt pressured to do so.

Seriously. Nobody is offended or outraged over the emails because Microsoft said "my bad". It makes the whole thing funny even. So why people are thumbing their nose at the fact that Microsoft took it upon themselves to apologize is beyond me. Maybe I just don't have that worldview in which Microsoft is stupid for remaining in good faith with their customers.

Maybe they aren't genuine, doesn't matter as long as they keep that to themselves I will never no the difference.

Just about anything can be mis-interpreted by someone determined to do so.
That never is a reason to have to apologise for it.
