US Copyright Court is really really strange. It's Trademarked to a hockey franchise. Sure there might be Knights Security. But that is a private security company. You can trademark it for a certain area. Eventually in the future, the Vegas owner might send some money to the London Knights in order to be allowed to use the name. But it'll be at least a decade before they make the change.

You aren't getting it, the " Knights " part isn't what is trademarked, what is trademarked is " London Knights". Vegas couldn't use " London Knights" but they could use " Knights", although I will ask my buddy to be sure. He is a lawyer that deals in International Copyright and Trademark law in DC. I'm pretty sure I'm right though because there have been other minor league hockey teams ( one here in Nashville in fact) that have used the name " knights " in the past.

The problem is from the Canadian POV not from the USA POV.

Having trouble pasting from phone. So go to Google and type:
    site:lfpress.com vegas knights london

You'll see a couple quotes from Foley and an OHL lawyer.

Talked to my friend, and basically he said they could have trademarked " knights" in Canada, but you would have to look up the individual trademark treaties between Canada and the US to determine if the Canadian trademark holds any sway in the US specifically as it pertains to sports teams. He said it would all boil down to the wording of those, but he said he suspected it would be worked out internally because the CHL is a feeder team for the NHL. We both had the opinion though that if the NHL really wanted the Vegas team to be the Knights, that they would get their way eventually.

And from reading that article it sounds like they couldn't actually stop them from using Knights for the Vegas team because the trademark is Canadian and the team is American.

“In the U.S. ‘Knights’ are fine. But we can’t use it in Canada, Foley said.”

Meaning if they really wanted to they could have named it that, they just wouldn't be able to sell merchandise for it in Canada.

Yes I'm sure they could have, but I imagine they wanted to avoid any frivolous law suits and worrying about legal fees.

Matthews finally gets a goal in a game Leafs win. I think Marner also tied Laine for rookie points. Also hearing rumours about trying to trade for Doogie Hamilton.

Why even name them the Knights? Why not Sentinels or Crusaders or Templars or something similar? Golden Knights just sounds like a watersports-themed medieval porn.

The NHL is ticking me off. After the Winnipeg game we got Neal with looks like could be a broken hand from a slash that wasn't called. Sissons with what appears to be a concussion from a major boarding penalty, and Ellis with some kind of injury ( not mad on that one, he probably did it to himself). By doing nothing on the boarding call we are calling up known tough guys from the NHL for this next Winnipeg game and they are doing the same thing. Stuff like this is what ticks me off, the do nothing, everything escalates and then we all sit around talking about how this stuff shouldn't be in the game but continues to be.

This game tomorrow night could get ugly in a hurry.

This is one of the things I heard discussed on the radio the other week, that certain calls are getting botched and things like slashing the hands is causing guys to miss time. The ineptitude of the NHL officials sometimes is incredible. Slashing of the hands should come with a longer penalty and an automatic fine. Maybe that is what the league needs to do to protect players, especially the young stars. Start making 2 minute minor penalties 3 minutes and make a major penalty an automatic 10 minutes with a 5 minute power play. That's a good way to increase scoring and start teaching guys that stupid penalties will cost you games.

I know your pain. Minnesota chopped Gaudreau some 20+ times without 1 penalty being called. He ended up breaking a finger and we're without our top scorer and forward for 6 weeks.

Yeah was discussing that game with some other Preds fans. My opinion is pretty much that entire officiating crew should be fired, and Minnesota coaches should have been suspended for 10 games without pay. I would also tell the team that if they even thought about fighting it I would ban them from post season play for 5 years and take every number one pick for the next 10.

Teams wouldn't want me as comissioner, I would be putting a stop to a ton of crap, and pissing in a whole lot of cheerios.

I'd say they should just be the Neon Knights, it being Vegas and all, but then Black Sabbath would sue them.

I really like the Outlaws as a team name for Vegas, and both of the football teams that had that name no longer exist so it should been fine.

Poor Bernier, holy fuck. That was a crazy game. Couldn't take a piss break or anything, or you'd miss a goal.

    Johnny Ovenmitts tore it up.

We looked bad over the weekend, but when you are picking warm bodies up off of waiver wires just to field a team to be able to play that is gonna happen.
