Question HDMI to VGA adaptor : No signal

Hello all, i recently bought a 1070 gtx but i am still using my old monitor until i can afford a new one.

The 1070 has no VGA slot so i had to buy one of those HDMI to VGA adaptors in order to connect it to my current monitor, however i get no image at all while i connect it.

This is the adaptor : https://s13.postimg.org/8iqt3l6ef/00054569abx.jpg Hama HDMI to VGA converter.
The card is the G1 version from Gigabyte.
Monitor is an old Samsung SyncMaster 933sn

PS : i also looked for a DVI-D to VGA adaptor but i can't find one at all. Any chance of a bit of help in trying to figure out what's the issue ?

    Thanks for reading.

more than likely you're trying to run a resolution that the adapter won't support....or you bought one of the cheap adapters that doesn't work. Your monitor also has a native resolution of 1360x768.

Upon further research, the hama adapter has tons of problems....it's finicky at anything above 30hz....It doesn't support 1920x1080 at 60hz.... monitors don't recognize being plugged into it....broken on delivery... You might need to get a new adapter

Just a quick heads-up if you read the answer from Acelius and plan to go out and get a DVI-to-VGA converter:

I googled your card, and found this: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...px?pid=5916#kf
In the specifications and on the pictures, it shows a DVI-D port, which does not carry analog signals, so a passive DVI-to-VGA converter will not work either.

If it were me...I'd wait a few weeks and just save 100 bucks to buy a 1080 monitor...cheap enough to work at respectable resolution till one could afford a good 1440p monitor

Again thanks for the replies guys.

A few questions though, how do i tell the difference between an ACTIVE and a Passive VGA to DVI-D adaptor ? Does it look different ? Does it say on the package ?

i'd honestly go with gilgemesh's idea and get a new monitor. a decent little 1080p thing isn't ridiculously expensive.

buying an active converter to run vga from a 1070 at 1360x768... i mean.. do what you want, but damn. that is a very overkill card for that.

I return with a bit more info.

I found a VGA to DVI-D adaptor ,however the issue remains,no signal at all. I have no clue if it's passive or active though. Could it be a compatibility problem with my MB ? This is my current MB http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...px?pid=3901#ov

However i found a guy that posted this : "Search for performance lead the company to remove as much legacy options as possible, and you can no longer connect the GTX 1080 with an analog display. D-SUB15 is now firmly in the past, and you cannot make the connection work even if you use a 3rd party adapter. The rest of connectors include a 144Hz-capable DVI, three DisplayPort 1.4 and a single HDMI 2.0B connector."
Basically even you use a converter,every1 is saying that NVIDIA have effectively killed analogue signal support.

Is it true ? Could VGA monitors just not work on the new GPU at all ?

That's absolutely why that is, surprised no one else has clued you in on that yet lol. They removed analog signals from DVI with 10 series GPU's. Time for a new monitor mate

So,not even an ACTIVE DVI-D to VGA will solve the issue then ?

PS : i just found out that my current adaptor is passive as well.

active converter should work as it should modulate the signal. however I have no first hand experience in the matter so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

tldr but its probably you bought an adapter without a usb connection cable attached to it as well which helps provide more power to the video card from the power supply via vga + usb. i bet if you find a vga to w/e coverter with a usb it will work.

i have 5 years it help desk role in college of business computer lab, intl corp that sells 750$ worth of makeup each year and a lending services company. most likely lack of power split on multiple monitors or something related to that, ill check back in a few days to see if this helped? gl

I had this same issue when hooking an older projector up to my computer. There are several different types of HDMI-to-VGA convertors and adapters out there. Find one that has it's own power and that did the trick for me. I went through about 4 or 5 of the type you linked earlier before trying one with it's own power supply.

Active should work but honestly man, why not just get a new monitor lol. You just bought a gtx 1070 and are using a screen resolution of 1366x768, you could have bought a used gtx 460 for 30 bucks and gotten the same gaming experience because your resolution is so low.

If you cannot afford a monitor i highly suggest you return the 1070 and buy a gtx 1060 and a proper monitor lol.

I'd sooner spring on a "very big" discount for a graphics card than pump the breaks because my current monitor is old. It's not like there aren't dozens of monitors which are constantly on sale which he can get later, you know?
