School math classes were one of the most painful things in my life... The teacher explains the rule: ln(ab) = ln(a) + ln(b). Calls a student and tells him, "Okay, now split ln(2a) into a sum of two logarithms". Awkward silence. Me: "Pleeeeeeeeease, end this nightmare!"
I guess some people are just incapable of abstract thinking. When they see f(x), or log_a^b, or (a+b)^2, they think that all these symbols are somehow hardcoded, not understanding that they are merely a substitute for actual values?
I mean, I used to think that people who can't understand that if 2a/2b = a/b, then 20/6 = 10/3 are just stupid... But I've met many overall pretty smart people who are godawfully terrible at everything related to math. I've even met physicists that had horrendous gaps in their math understanding. So, at the very least, there is more to it.
I'm going to pretend I never entered this thread again...
