    What player type are you?

I enjoy this essay on MUDs and it seems to fit very well for MMOs as well. Now obviously, most of us would have aspects of all 4 player types, but which do you think you fit into most?

    http://mud.co.uk/richard/hcds.htm

    Player types:

    • Socializer
    Socialising with others.

Players use the game's communicative facilities, and apply the role-playing that these engender, as a context in which to converse (and otherwise interact) with their fellow players.
    • Killer
    Imposition upon others.

Players use the tools provided by the game to cause distress to (or, in rare circumstances, to help) other players. Where permitted, this usually involves acquiring some weapon and applying it enthusiastically to the persona of another player in the game world.
    • Achiever
    Achievement within the game context.

Players give themselves game-related goals, and vigorously set out to achieve them. This usually means accumulating and disposing of large quantities of high-value treasure, or cutting a swathe through hordes of mobiles (ie. monsters built in to the virtual world).
    • Explorer
    Exploration of the game.

Players try to find out as much as they can about the virtual world. Although initially this means mapping its topology (ie. exploring the MUD's breadth), later it advances to experimentation with its physics (ie. exploring the MUD's depth).

Explorer who just wants to do what he wants, beating the game is not that important to me. I was subbed all the way through MoP and halfway through WoD without having ever finished a raid on a difficultly other than LFR. Just let me enjoy my quests, my dungeons, my transmog hunting, my RPing, my arenas, and let me play the legendary quest and I'll cough up $15.

Achiever is really the only one that's kinda close.

I feel like the choices aren't even that good.

Socializer - It's an MMO, how are you not going to communicate? I may as well play a single player game if I'm not even teamed up.
Killer - If it's PVP I guess. I mean, I don't go out of my way to grief people...
Achiever - Well yeah the point of the game is to play it and complete objectives. Why wouldn't you go for achievements?
Explorer - I mean, a good game world means you should know or want to see everything in the world. Usually by default you have to know the layout of the world.

    I fucking guess achiever.

I picked explorer, but its more of a mix of explorer and achiever. though in my case, explorer is pretty litteral. I don't experiment too much with builds, I just love learning about the lore and exploring nooks and crannies of the world.

Explorer with a bit of achiever. Even though the theory was debunked, it's still fun to see how people perceive their gameplay style.

Where was it debunked? I'm not even sure if it could be "debunked". Doesn't sound like the author is trying to assert any concrete science here.

I'd be an Achiever I suppose, of which I reckon would have the most votes in your poll.

Achiever. Then explorer once I feel I've achieved my goals.

For example when I completed Oblivion back in 08 I spent ages stalking NPC's to learn their schedules, messing around with the physics engine and learning about the lore.

    Explorer is more like it.

For a while, it was used at large by the player base and strongly enforced into the development of games. But this goes a while back.

Still not sure what you meant when you said "debunked". Was there any more literature that deviated from this?

I'm a mix of Killer and achiever, especially if it involves group gameplay to pull it off.

That would be my answer as well thats whyi stuck to games like d2 for so long or the classic fps where its all about owning noobs and where getting better was an achievement in itself.
