Very rarely, but forced check in to a mental institute does happen, but unfortunately it's reserved more for people who have not committed a crime. I.e. when I was growing up, my sister threatened to kill herself in-front of medical professionals after consuming a bottle of Tylenol. She was forced to be committed to a mental institute for 7 days. This was the state of Pennsylvania
She also was struggling with depression swerved into traffic, intentionally, while her child was in the car. Legally she could have gone to prison, instead they settled on probation for a few months, sending her child away to its father, and 2 months of mental rehab. This was in the state of Washington
