That's not really the point. The point is that in the USA we have more than enough nukes obliterate the entire world many times over. Way more than enough to convince any country or group of countries of mutually assured destruction. We don't need any more. We don't ever need any more. It would be completely pointless to ever have any more.

I'm not exactly a Trump supporter, but I hope he does well. Statements like this certainly don't help.

Except when he creates an international incident because he couldn't stop himself from tweeting a shitpost about a foreign leader at 3AM in the morning.

I bet thats his reaction after he was briefed from some dudes from the Pentagon on how far behind is USA's nuclear arsenal, capabilities and missile technology in comparison to the Russian. It was expected in all honesty, i wasn't surprised one bit.

That is not at all what my original comment even indicated. It specifically stated that pointing out how ridiculous liberals are != doing things because it makes liberals mad.

You are the one trying to equate it to that is exactly what people do.

Is there really, REALLY any need to upgrade a nuclear arsenal that is already enough to destroy the world dozens of times over? If you REALLY needed a nuclear missile, all you'd really need is a handful to make your point (read: destroy any and all targets that matter). Having thousands like we do is overkill.

At some point, a nuke is just powerful enough. What else do you need to destroy, Jupiter? The Sun? If a single modern nuke goes off we're all most likely dead anyway thanks to atmospheric fallout and ridiculous, continuous upgrades since WW2. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are peanuts compared to what nukes can do in 2016/2017.

North Korea does not have modernized nuclear capabilities. They have a few nukes that they could maybe launch all the way to Japan and I'm pretty sure they're not nearly as powerful as the bombs we dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

People hear "nuclear weapons" and assume they can land their nuke wherever they want and completely level an entire city.

Russia is the only country with nuclear weaponry comparable to the USA.

Edit: From what I just read, apparently North Korea's nuclear weapons are probably between 10 and 30 kilotons of TNT. For some perspective, the Hiroshima bomb was 15 kilotons. So their weapons are on par with what we have had since 1945. More powerful than I thought, but by no means up to date.

Looks like classic Trump really. The USA does not need to expand it's nuclear arsenal, it already has the capacity to make the planet uninhabitable dozens of times over. Whilst the USA has been signed up to NPT since 1968 that didn't mean the USA just left it's nuclear arsenal to rot, whilst NPT forbids expansion it does not forbid modification which is how the USA has developed it's nuclear weapons since signing NPT.

Rather than making more nukes, the US has been making it's nukes more effective, turning them into bunker busters so that no enemy regime would be safe, creating low yield nukes to be detonated in the high atmosphere to destroy enemy infrastructure via an EMP and creating more effective delivery systems that would stop it's enemies from shooting them down before they reached the target or creating devastation across a much larger area. Whilst it's internationally banned it's probably quite likely that the US has nukes modified for underwater explosions to cripple enemy naval fleets via sinking them or irradiation.

Nuclear expansion is a frivolity the US doesn't need and would be an international relations disaster with it's allies, it really doesn't matter if Putin wants to build more nukes, if he wants to waste vast amounts of money on yet more nukes that Russia doesn't need either then let him, it will only hasten Russians bankruptcy.

    Genn put it best here.

The GOP and Republicans seem to refuse to acknowledge that there was a shift in where the parties aligned between the Civil War and the modern era, because history isn't convenient when it doesn't make you look good. Historical revisionism is fun, isn't it!

Err what? Trump doesn't attend intelligence briefings. So what the hell are you talking about?

Now as a president he can launch nukes and there is no legal way to stop him if he orders a nuclear strike.
Just because he is President does not mean that he has absolute power. If his cabinet leaders do not agree with him then they can stop him. Problem is, he's not wrong. We have spent trillions and trillions of dollars building up the rest of the world that we are now behind them in almost every aspect. Russia has a stronger military, China is far more technologically advanced, England has a much stronger economy, etc. We have been more worried about controlling the 3rd world countries and forcefully spreading "Democracy", which is total bs because we don't have a full blown Democracy, that we are no longer "in the lead" when it comes to anything other than debt. Stop worrying about everyone else and build us back up. If that means growing our nuclear power to deter threats then so be it.
