Can you skip using lightning bolt ?

I know it's a nab question and I know that on a single target fight, you should use lightning bolt over chain lightning.

My question is simply if the dps loss from always using chain lighting is negligible based on the meer 2 maelstrom you lose pr. cast from using chain lightning on single target also.

    Anyone done the calculations ?

Guess I could sim it myself....

Wowhead says its 15 from LB and 6 from CL under the Fulmination passive?

I have tried it not that long ago (a month or so... maybe?) and found there was a significant difference in dps with CL and LB on single target on the test dummy over 5 minutes. If I remember correctly, it was about a 10-15% difference in DPS between the two after about five 5 minute runs on each rotation.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I gotta bind that shit to a spam friendly bind anyways

Lightening Bolt receives a larger benefit from spell power than CL.

Well, I don't know how your keybinds are set up, but personally, I have my lightning bolt set to a key and my Chain lighting set to Shift+(That same key)... YMMV, but it works well for me.

both of mine deal 84,648 nature damage, the differences are in overload chance, maelstrom generation, power of the maelstrom etc making lightning bolt superior for 1 target.

uhhh if you have 3 chain lightning relics, it MIGHT be worthwhile, I'd have to do the math, but otherwise between your gold trait that gives you extra lightning bolt mastery procs (you'd at least have to use it for that) and the 2-4 extra maelstrom, I'd stick to alternating, it's not like pressing a different button when theres 2 targets is that hard

otherwise though, you're gimping your maelstrom generation...

but basically you'd just gimp yourself out of like 4-10 or so earth shocks over a fight

also if you don't like the extra bind, stop playing ele in 7.1.5 we'll gain 2 with elemental blast and icefury, it'll have more rotational spells than just about any other class.

Chain lightning have 1/5 chance to proc overload at single target. + power of the maelstrom. Dont be lazy after 30 years your brain will thank you.

Did the sims, and at 875 ilvl on generic single target fight using CL over LB was a flat 50k decrease.

What it comes down to is the power of the maelstrom artifact trait, u obv wanna LB when that is up

I'm curious what your other binds look like. As in which spells you have at your convenient keys.

Personally I use a certain pattern between all my specs/classes.

    main left bar:
    1 - lava burst
    2 - earth shock
    3 - flame shock
    4 - lightning bolt
    5 - chain lightning
6 - whatever i need on a fight (like extra action button macro)
    R - gust of win
    Q - frost shock
    E - wind shear
F - historically ele blast, now icefury if talented
    G - cleanse
    T - set focus

    above left bar:
shift + 1 ascendance macro (incl ele mastery / blood fury)
    shift + 2 healing surge
    shift + 3 earhtquake
    shift + 4 stormkeeper
    shift + 5 blood fury
shift + 6 open for whatever I need on a fight
    shift + R ele mastery
    shift + Q astral shift
    shift + E focus kick
shift + F skyfury totem (pvp)
    shift + G pvp
shift + T usually move pet macro, but here focus hex

    bar above bags:
have a corsair mouse with 12 buttons, all mapped to the numpa
numpad 0: tar arena 1 (shift + this = ghostwolf, and I use an AHK script that allows me to use shift + num keys)
    numpad 1: tar arena 2
    numpad 2: tar arena 3
    numpad 3: purge
    numpad 4: hex
    numpad 5: stop casting macro
numpad 6: used to be frost shock, now its still an open slot
    numpad 7: earthbind totem
    numpad 8: thunderstorm
    numpad 9: open slot
    numpad +: open slot
    numpad -: open slot

bar1 on right hand side of screen
    F1: heal party 1
    F2: heal party 2
    F3: earth elemental
    F4: food
    F5: mana drink
    OEM: totem mastery
    \ : water walk
    x: revive
    c: pvp trinket
v: typically a stun (like earthbind ele stun)
F7 (bind to mousebutton 4): rocket boots
F12 (bind to mousebutton 5): parachute

bar2 on right hand side of screen
    alt+1 to 3: open slots
    alt+q: open slot
    alt+e: healthstone
    alt+f: mount
    alt+OEM: fire elemental
    alt+v: bloodlust
scroll up: pet attack (now dispell party1)
scroll down: pet follow (now dispell party2)
numpad . = totemic recall, now empty

I could change a lot of binds on the 2 right hand side bars, but since I've been using the same key layout for like 5 years I'm just leaving it as it is for convenience. And nothing I hate more than when a patch adds a spell and you have to change your whole keybind logic.
