Far as I understand it, though IANAL, it's entrapment if the person in question would have been unlikely to fall for it in any other setting. If they can reasonably prove that the person acted independently of the baiting, it's just a sting operation.
I imagine the fantasy defense applies too.

to those morons who can't add 1 and 1:

The OP probably got the news from /r/Oculus or other VR centric places, where his job is VERY relevant, since he was the lead engineer at Oculus LLC.

The defense probably is shot down right away:
Instead they claim they were engaged in a fantasy and in the case of luring a minor, believed they were dealing with an adult.
It's a pretty poor excuse to claim not knowing someone is underage, if they reply to an add that flat out says they are underage.

Should have posted the charging document; the specifics are a bit more sketchy.

The agent advertised as 19. After arranging a meeting, the agent "confessed" to be younger, and asked if they were ok with it.
I suppose the fact that he claimed he was rescuing the girl undermines it too, so you might be right. The defense is a bit funky anyway, and the exchange is all kinds of red flags. But I thought it was worth mentioning, in the context of what constitutes entrapment.

Even when the officer claimed 19 at first, the 15 clearly came up later, and the guy agreed with it anyway. Also, lol at the "wanted to rescue her" From what? Having too many condoms unused? He'd get extra for that bs, if I got to decide.

Why is this isolated incident worthy of being posted on these forums? And why is his occupation of interest in this case?

If he's an important person in that industry, we might know who it is and then it'd be a scandal.

Meh. His occupation means nothing here. Sting operations are unethical and have few tangible benefits. Vice departments in US are moronic (well, it's more the laws that are moronic, but vice departments act on them and enforce them, tainting themselves in the process). And it's not pedophilia by any stretch. Hell, 15 year's old is the age of consent where I live. So at worst I can condemn the guy only for knowingly breaking his local laws.

As Dave Chappelle once put it "how old is 15 really?".

So he didnt even chat with a 15 year old and gets punished? Wow thats some shitty laws you got there.

Sounds like Minority Report stuff... catch someone for crimes he might do in the future.

I'm more concerned with the fact that the OP still uses team speak.

He's fucked. Great, throw away the key while you're at it. People like him should be executed.

It happened to a guy I went to highschool with. A few years after we graduated he had made plans to meet a 15 year old girl from a yahoo chat room for sex. Turns out it was a deputy sheriff that was working a sting operation for that shit. When he went to meet the "girl" the sheriffs were there to take him into custody.

Difference is that if refugees or migrants are going around raping far more than others, it is of public interest (and if you didn't figure it out already, this is the case with people coming from socially underdeveloped countries to the west).

Yeah, IANAL and the guy's clearly sleazy, but criminalizing this is pretty borderline. Calling it "commercial sex abuse of a minor" when there is no minor is pretty absurd.

Or not. His source is king5 you dumb fuck, they're the ones that mention his profession and they have nothing to do with this area.

isn't it obvious the everyone why his job is mentioned, it's stereotyping VR engineers and the whole "it will be made for porn", gamers are lonely nerds who have to masterbate etc etc. so clearly because he's a VR designing nerd he's scrawny pasty white and has to pay for sex, he's not alpha what a loser!
