When people pay for a meal, like a steak, IMO, the chef should set aside his or her personal bias and just give the customer what they want. I sure as hell won't pay for food to come out any other way than the way I asked for it.
i would have just responded with well then i'll go elsewhere and walked out.

As a cook, if you're coming in to order a ruined piece of meat so you can slather ketchup all over it. I hate you. I really do.

I dunno. I don't really ever see people get angry at people who get well-done steaks. Maybe a few giggles or joking, but nothing malicious. It seems to go towards people on the other end of the spectrum. My family makes jokes about both my uncle, who likes them well done ("Just burn it black and bring it out smoking") and my grandmother, who likes it very rare ("Just cut it off the cow right in front of her")

Me personally? I like my steaks medium-rare. A little juice, still reddish-pink but warm. I've tried it well done and didn't like it at all - no taste in my opinion. But again, my opinion. SO long as you enjoy how your steak is cooked, and you've given at least medium a try, you'll get nothing but maybe a little light-hearted ribbing from me.

I actually see it more the other way around. I remember specifically when I was at a dinner with extended family, the waiter refused to bring me out a medium-rare steak because "I was too young' (12 at the time). We ordered it medium-rare anyway, and it came out well done. We all (12 of us, a ticket worth easily over $700) left without touching a bite on our plates, and have never returned.

The only steak I eat is a well done steak, anything else tastes horrible to me, if you have different tatstes then good for you, I am not gonna eat something that tastes like garbage to me just to make you feel better.

You're a horrible person; and I'm sorry that you're horrible. Don't destroy food you'll be much better off.

As a cook in a restaurant, nothing disappoints me more than having to take a perfect NY Strip steak and DESTROYING it by cooking it well. All of the flavor comes from the juices and well steaks have their juice cooked out of them. They become dry, crunchy, and tough to chew at well.

If you want beef jerky, go to a gas station and buy it there. Otherwise, cook your steaks to medium and stop.

if im not cooking, i order it well done, cause if i order it medium well 9 times out of 10, itll come to the table bloody, which just kind of grosses me out. generally if i order it well done, it comes a little pink, which is how i like it.

however, i will never, ever put any kind of sauce on steak. if you want the sauce flavor, use it on chicken or pork.

You can have your strawberries with salt.

You can eat your cheese with chocolate.

You can eat caned tuna with blueberry marmelade.

You cant eat your beef overcooked.

All these options are possible, and you do you. But they also are repulsive to any decent human being. DEAL WITH IT !!!

If you're a cook in a restaurant, you should know how to cook a steak w/out that happening. I'm guessing you're just a bad cook if when you cook a steal well done it's dry, crunchy, and tough to chew as well.

So much hate on Ketchup, I hate tomatoes, but I love ketchup, put it on anything and everything. Ketchup = #1 universal condiment in my book.

Exactly, I've never had a "crunchy" well-done steak.

Must just be shitty at making steaks.

If your cook thinks cooking a well done steak just means keeping it on the grill longer they're a bad cook.

I have been known to throw A1 or 57 sauce on steaks that weren't good.

I typically order my steaks medium/medium well, depending on the restaurant. I like it pink all through, but not bloody. It gets too chewy the closer to rare you go.

When I cook a steak, it's usually medium/medium rare, but I also cook thinner steaks than what I get when I go out, so it stays pink but still cooked enough to not be bloody. It still leaves a ton of juice on the plate, so I know it's not dry!

I don't see how the taste changes that much from say medium rare to well done. just involves more chewing.

Nixx is right on this one, it is basically murder to a good steak to think of putting ketchup on it.

That said, this thread has proven one thing. The vast majority of the population are opinionated snobs.
It proves that there's a bunch of people who are going to claim that their inferior sense of taste is superior or equal to people with a great palette.

It's funny how people who want their steaks welldone rarely (hehe) rarely stop to wonder if they're just plain wrong, while calling literally everybody who disagrees with them snobs.

I was exaggerating for effect, but TY for that input. I'll file it away in my suggestion box.

the need for sauce goes up exponentially. I'd rather have a few bites without it and enjoy what seasoning it already has.
