The guy who created the classification/naming of alt-right as a group is quite seriously a neo-nazi white supremacist. For awhile, it was just neo-nazis and white supremacists, then a bunch of Republicans picked it up because they heard somewhere that alt-right is what was throwing its support behind Trump.

Just like how Republicans all very temporarily became "libertarians" (quotes extremely emphasized there) because they had a few month hard-on for Ron Paul in 2012. That was a fun year. Every time you called one of the conservatives on this board a conservative or a Republican they would screech "I'M NOT A REPUBLICAN I'M A LIBERTARIAN!"

Same here and I have no problem admitting I make a ton of racist jokes among friends with mostly self-deprecating humor. Other people have gotten offended on my behalf when my mates and I joke about me and explosives, when I will probably say something far worse but funny regarding my friends as a comeback.

I don't buy into the whole "normalization of racism" argument, because I firmly believe humor is an amazing ability we have as human beings to move past and desensitize taboo topics. You can both educate and joke about serious issues as they aren't mutually exclusive. Putting a muzzle on them and getting offended about everything isn't the way to go.

Of course. There's a world of difference between making racist jokes with friends that you know will fire back (I do it myself with my friends from Haiti and India) and doing so in a public or semi-public space at people who don't know you very well and might think you're actually serious.

I also don't buy normalization of racism on the part of simple jokes. People of diverse origins being discouraged/barred from interacting eith each other (in workplaces, schools, sports, centres of religion, etc.) contributes to racism far more. In fact I'd say a black dude and a white one trading stereotypical jabs in good fun contributes far less to racism than both these people not speaking to each other because of preconceptions.

In the end, talking with each other is how you beat racism, because deep down we're not all that different from each other. That includes liking a good laugh sometimes.
